It was 79 years ago today (Dec. 7) when 21-year-old Rudolph “Rudy” Machado Martinez, a Mexican-American sailor with the U.S. Navy, became the first Latino casualty of WWII when he died at Pearl Harbor. Martinez was one of approximately 500,000 Latinos who served their country in WWII.
Martinez, who was raised in San Diego, was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii when his battleship, the USS Utah, was hit by two Japanese torpedoes. Fifty-eight men, including Martinez, died on the vessel when it sank that day.
Mass testing for Covid brought down the infection rate in Slovakia by about 60% in one week, say UK researchers – but in combination with tough quarantine rules and other measures that are not being implemented in Liverpool or elsewhere in the UK. Slovakia guaranteed high take-up of the rapid tests by requiring employers not to allow people to work without a certificate to prove they had tested negative. Anybody who got a positive result had to go into quarantine with their family, but their full salary was paid for the 10 days of isolation.
The statue’s removal is part of a series of major changes at the school, including the resignation of the institute’s longtime superintendent Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III and the call for an investigation by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, another VMI alumnus. Peay was replaced by Cedric Rims, the first Black superintendent to lead the school. VMI also pledged to create an office of diversity, eliminating its status as the lone state-supported college or university in Virginia without an office of inclusion or diversity.
Under the policy Gascón laid out, beginning Jan. 1, the use of cash bail will end in L.A. County. Instead, prosecutors will be directed to ask judges to release defendants while their cases move through the courts, except when someone is accused of homicide or a small number of other serious crimes. In those cases, prosecutors will seek to have defendants kept in custody. Source: On first day, L.A. County D.A. George Gascón eliminates bail – Los Angeles Times
Farm animals represent an immensely large number of individuals who systematically suffer in an absurdly cruel way while receiving a very slim fraction of the efforts for animal welfare and charity…
She woke up suddenly and felt a deep mix feeling of all sorts of emotions. Her heart was filled with desolation as well as a pinch of excitement too!! She saw all airbags, suitcases, luggagges around her bed and a drop of tear rolled down her eyes!! She got lost into deep rumination for a bit, but was heckled by a voice from behind “Daughter, get up and get ready fast! We are running out of time, need to catch train’ By hearing those words another few tear drops poured out… She felt like ceasing the moment and not to let it progress atall!! But then she snubbed the thoughts and prepared herself to be ready to catch the train with her parents!! As the speed of train was rocketing, her heart beat was at full tilt!! Body was palpitating with full sweat!! Finally train reached to its destination thus…
It’s not Washington that must act, it is the Republicans who must act, and more specifically it is amply be-chinned Mitch McConnell who must act. Don’t try to Both Sides this on-coming humanitarian and financial crisis during a pandemic.
McConnell has been sitting on multiple relief bills for close to 9 months and doing nothing. We could have the Trump-Virus relief bill behinds us right now, this very moment if Mitch McConnell gave on good goddamn, but he doesn’t.
My spidey senses went into the Danger Zone reading this blurb from the Politico afternoon email thingie:
A COUNTRY FALLING APART … WILL WASHINGTON ACT? … “Millions of Americans are heading into the holidays unemployed and over $5,000 behind on rent,”by WaPo’s Heather Long: “Nearly 12 million renters will owe an average of $5,850 in back rent and utilities by January, Moody’s Analytics warns. Last month 9 million renters said they were behind on rent … The numbers were especially high for families with children, with 21 percent falling behind on rent, and among families of color.”
It’s not Washington that must act, it is the Republicans who must act, and more specifically it is amply be-chinnedMitch McConnell who must act. Don’t try to Both Sides this on-coming humanitarian and financial crisis during a pandemic.
