Two studies find that COVID-19 antibodies last 8 months | CIDRAP
Two studies published yesterday demonstrate that COVID-19 immune responses last as long as 8 months, although the authors focus on different reasons.
The first study, published in Science Immunology, followed a small cohort of Australians from day 4 to day 242 after infection. All patients demonstrated the presence of memory B cells—immune cells that “remember” viral proteins and can trigger rapid production of antibodies when re-exposed to the virus—as long as 8 months after initial infection.
The second study investigated antibody responses in 58 confirmed COVID-19 patients in South Korea 8 months after asymptomatic or mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, finding high rates of serum antibodies. These results, published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, is contradictory to both the first study’s antibody data and previous research that showed antibodies waning after 20 days, but the authors suggest that variations in immunoassay test characteristics and manufacturing may be responsible for the difference.

Passenger Who Had Medical Emergency on Flight Died of Covid-19, Coroner Says – The New York Times
A coroner in Louisiana confirmed on Tuesday what some had feared: that the death last week of a 69-year-old man who experienced a medical emergency aboard a United Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles had been caused by Covid-19.
The coroner’s office in Jefferson Parish identified the passenger as Isais Hernandez, 69, of Los Angeles, who was on United Flight 591 when it took off from Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 14.
The episode prompted alarm after social media reports at the time indicated that the man’s wife had told emergency medical workers that her husband had tested positive for the coronavirus.
At the time, United and medical professionals said they had not known that Mr. Hernandez had Covid-19. The airline did say that the man’s wife had been overheard telling an emergency worker that her husband had symptoms of Covid-19, including loss of taste and smell.

Jamaica’s Christmas Slave Uprising (1831)- OZY | A Modern Media Company
Sharpe may not have achieved the nonviolent victory he hoped for, but within 18 months of that first signal fire in Jamaica, Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, effectively abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire. Three decades later, slavery would also be abolished in the United States, but at a far bloodier price. Like Gandhi after him, Sharpe had taken on the most powerful empire in the world, and achieved an astonishing capitulation.
Vilified by authorities for decades, the “Right Honorable” Samuel Sharpe is now a member of Jamaica’s Order of National Hero and his visage appears on the 50-dollar bill. “His face is on Jamaican currency,” as Zoellner puts it, “but he is a hero for the world.”
