Even as Covid-19 is still around, tuberculosis remains India’s biggest health crisis

Covid-19 has disrupted life across India as we know it. Response to this pandemic has impacted other health services of which tuberculosis is the most significant. With similar clinical symptoms, TB and Covid-19 present a deadly mix for India’s health system. TB, though curable, remains India’s severest health crisis killing over 1,200 Indians daily with delays in diagnosis, treatment, access and possibly increased suffering, mental health issues for those affected.

The TB programme and its services have been badly hit in the Covid-19 pandemic. Our recent analysis of on-ground cases and reports reveal that both diagnosis and treatment are significantly affected.

Delhi leads India’s COVID-19 clampdown on New Year events – CNA

New Delhi and other major cities across India on Thursday (Dec 31) ordered curfews for New Year’s Eve as they stepped up efforts to head off a new coronavirus wave.

In the capital, the curfew would run for two days from 11pm until 6am with gatherings limited to five people even before the shutdown, authorities said.

Normally, tens of thousands of revellers pack central Delhi to see in the New Year.

But with frantic efforts being made to track thousands of people who have recently returned from Britain because of the new coronavirus strain, the city of 20 million people joined a growing number of Indian states that have imposed draconian restrictions on New Year gatherings.

Thousands of virus vaccines sent to an El Paso clinic won’t be administered for 2 weeks – KVIA – (a look into why we need good leadership at all levels for vaccines)

Director of Operations Dusty Warden told ABC-7 they received notice of the shipment on Dec. 22. By the next day, they received the thousands of doses of the vaccine. The clinics were scheduled to be closed the next day for the holidays. (no one thought that altering holiday schedule was important to public health)

Warden told ABC-7 they used the two weeks to train staff, alert the public and ensure they had a “well-thought-out process” before they were ready to administer the vaccines. (they knew vaccines were coming so why weren’t they already trained?)

Immunize El Paso this week started accepting appointments for the 2,000 vaccine doses they received. The appointments are all booked and will be spread out between their clinics.

They do not know when they will receive another shipment.

An Important Message About the Recent Surge of COVID-19 | SAG-AFTRA – Entertainment

Most entertainment productions will remain on hiatus until the second or third week of January if not later. This means that the number of our member performers working on sets right now is reduced. Our safety protocols ensure appropriate precautions for the holiday hiatus period including additional time for testing prior to the resumption of production.

To ensure the utmost safety, we are in close contact with our sister unions and guilds, the industry, our expert epidemiologists, industrial sanitation specialists, public health officials, member leaders and staff. We remain focused on ensuring the safest possible work environment and protocols for SAG-AFTRA members.

County Reports 2,448 New COVID-19 Infections, New Variant Infection Found | KPBS

A sign reminding people of socially distance during the COVID-19 pandemic at ... San Diego County public health officials reported 37 COVID-19-related deaths and 2,448 infections Wednesday, including one individual infected with a new, more contagious variant of the virus first discovered in the United Kingdom.

The variant, known as B.1.1.7, was first found in the United States Tuesday in Colorado. The San Diego case is in a man in his 30s with no history of travel who first became symptomatic Dec. 27 and tested positive Dec. 29. He has not been hospitalized and contact tracing is underway.

“Because there is no travel history, we believe this is not an isolated case in San Diego County,” County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.

‘Massive’ COVID-19 transmission among 20-40 year olds has Austin health leaders worried | KXAN Austin

“It’s particularly important for those [20-29 and 30-39 age] groups to understand: you can be hospitalized even though you’re young, you can end up in critical care even though you’re young, you can die even though you’re young.”

-INTERIM HEALTH AUTHORITY DR. MARK ESCOTT ON DEC. 29

Escott said young people also play a role in how the virus is spreading to groups more at risk for severe symptoms. For example, he explained in the 80+ age group, COVID-19 hospitalization rates “continue to creep up,” which is concerning because that group is the most likely to need critical care and most likely to die of COVID-19.

Speaking of Austin-area residents in the 20-39 age group, Escott added, “we need to impact the transmission in those age groups in order to prevent better the transmission in the upper age groups, which tends to follow behind the transmissions in the younger age groups.”
