Flattening the curve worked — until it didn’t – Dylan Scott Dec 31 2020 — Just Sayin’

The US started 2020 by “flattening the curve” — and never came up with a plan for what comes next. The White House is seen through pictures of people who died due to Covid-19 at a National Covid-19 Remembrance event in Washington, DC, on October 4. In the spring of 2020, as Covid-19 was beginning to take […]

Flattening the curve worked — until it didn’t – Dylan Scott Dec 31 2020 — Just Sayin’

But America failed to take advantage of that window to ramp up its virus testing and tracing capabilities, and states quickly faced intense pressure to relax their policies to alleviate the economic costs of the shutdowns. Reopening began earlier than public health experts believed it should. The political will to impose new lockdowns had evaporated by the time cases spiked again.

At the end of 2020, with more than 20 million Covid-19 cases and nearly 350,000 deaths in the US, it is evident that trying to flatten the curve was not sufficient to end the pandemic. That doesn’t mean it failed entirely. Slowing the spread of Covid-19 was meant to buy time to figure out what came next. But the US never did.

Un voyage vraiment magique – “La Magie de l’Amazonie Les aventures de Meromi, une fille Yanomami”

A truly magical journey – “The Magic of the Amazon The Adventures of Meromi, a Yanomami Girl”

Barbara Crane Navarro

Why Covid Is Dangerous for People Who Don’t Require Hospitalization

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

As stated numerous times, this is a new illness, and we are learning almost daily about how it works.

The latest findings are disturbing, but we don’t yet fully know what they mean.

The virus generates a somewhat accelerated and uncontrolled response from the body’s immune system. We know this massive response can impair lung function beyond the damage that the virus does directly. We also know that the virus can shift in some people from the lungs to the blood stream and either create spontaneous clots or attack organ tissue.

The medical term for the over-the-top immune response is “dysregulated.” Meaning that the response is suboptimal for the health of the patient.

What we know now from a newly released University of Alabama study is that this dysregulated response and exhaustion of immune cells can be more pronounced among those who don’t require hospitalization, and the effects on…

Banking On Cuba’s Coronavirus Vaccines

Jamaica Woman Tongue

The scramble for COVID-19 vaccines has exposed yet again the gross inequities across the globe. Rich countries have fast-forwarded to the head of the line. Poor countries like Jamaica will have to wait for a relatively long time to get vaccines. After all, pharmaceutical companies are not in the business of charity. What matters is profit. In these circumstances, the headline of a Gleaner report published on December 4 gave what appeared to be surprisingly good news: Jamaica Gets Big COVID-19 Vaccine Discount, One Million Vials Expected By March.

Negotiations were made through the COVAX facility for the procurement of vaccines, which was intended to level the playing field, ensuring access for poor countries. But the game is not being played fairly. A BBC news story published on December 19 reports the following: According to researchers at Duke University, which is keeping track of deals between governments…

Health Ministry, NERHA mourn loss of Tyrone Robinson

RIP

Petchary's Blog

COVID-19 continues to take its toll. Now a senior member of Jamaica’s health infrastructure has passed away from COVID-19 complications – a man whom Minister of Health and Wellness Christopher Tufton described this evening as a friend and a “hands-on Chairman,” whose advice and guidance he greatly valued. Here is the Ministry’s press release:
