Covid-19: UK daily coronavirus cases top 60,000 for first time – BBC News
According to government figures on Tuesday, the number of people who tested positive was 60,916.
One in 50 people in private households in England had Covid last week – and one in 30 in London, according to estimates based on the latest data.
A further 830 people have also died within 28 days of a positive test.
It comes as England and Scotland announced new strict lockdowns, with people told to stay at home.

The Alabama Department of Public Health’s Jan. 5 10 a.m. numbers show the state has had 379,593 coronavirus cases since March with 5,498 added since yesterday. Wolf spiders are among the most important predators in the Alaska Arctic
The new research from Washington University in St. Louis and the study conducted in Alaska suggests that as female wolf spiders become larger and produce more offspring, competition among them increases triggering higher rates of cannibalism and reducing the number of young spiders that survive to adulthood.
According to Amanda koltz, biology researchers said in our experimental data suggest that when there are lots of spiders around they turn to cannibalism more frequently and in the new study its likely a reflection of increased competition among the spiders for resources.
