The Greenland ice sheet may be more vulnerable than we knew to global warming, new study shows – The Washington Post

Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities have already raised global average temperatures more than 1 degree Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1880. Greenland is losing ice at its fastest rate since humans invented agriculture, causing about 14 millimeters of sea level rise in the past half-century.

If the island’s entire ice sheet were to melt now, global sea levels would rise by more than 20 feet.

“We don’t want to see what that looks like,” said Christ, a geologist at the University of Vermont. “It underscores the urgency of needing to change the way things are going right now.”

Myanmar Crackdown on Protesters Kills 25 as Junta Imposes 24-Hour Mobile Internet Shutdown — Radio Free Asia

At least 25 people were shot dead Monday as anti-coup protesters in multiple cities braved increasing violence by security forces following a bloody weekend that killed scores of protesters in Myanmar’s largest city, witnesses said.

The junta that overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government on Feb. 1 also imposed a 24-hours shutdown of mobile internet service in an attempt to cut off lines of communication among protesters and other members of a nationwide civil disobedience movement (CDM) that has opposed military rule for six weeks.

The suspension of internet service forced court officials in the capital Naypyidaw to postpone the videoconference trial hearing of the 75-year-old deposed leader, who has been under house arrest since the coup and is facing a handful of what supporters say are spurious charges.

Cultural imperialism

Representatives of large language groups are not overwhelmed by the feeling that they are losing their own identity and culture when they can only use their own language to a limited extent on the international internet. As many sociologists and linguists have pointed out, languages also bring with them the culture of the country represented by the speakers. These habits can differ greatly from those of a country represented by a small language group and can even be harmful or offensive. Google’s translator has made the situation a little easier, but its ability to translate Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages is still at most satisfactory at best. Thus, it is clear that in the case of poems, for example, its use is out of the question. It’s also surprising that you can’t give Google Translator a character, what points in the article it should not be translated. Such a feature would be necessary in a multilingual article comparing, for example, the features of different languages.

Europe’s caution over Oxford vaccine about more than the science | World news | The Guardian

Experts say that the numbers of blood clots and thrombocytopenia cases in people who have been vaccinated is no higher than in the population that has not received the jab. The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, representing medical experts around the world, said on Friday that “the small number of reported thrombotic events relative to the millions of administered Covid-19 vaccinations does not suggest a direct link”.

Blood clots are common, they said, but not more common in people who have had a Covid jab, from evidence so far. They recommended that even people with a history of blood clots or taking blood-thinning drugs should go and get their vaccination.
