Covid: ‘Don’t squander gains,’ says Prof Stephen Powis – BBC News – (Me: Boris still wants to gamble and is too willing to lose lives to get back to “normal…”)

Prof Powis said: “We’ve made enormous progress that we need to build on and not squander the gains we’ve made.” He added: “We need to hold our nerve and drive for the line, so everyone can get back safely and soon to our normal lives.” In England from Monday, the stay-at-home rule is ending and groups of up to six, or two households, will be allowed to meet outside – including in private gardens. The next stage – due no earlier than 12 April – will allow non-essential retail, restaurants and pubs to reopen in England.

Ted Crosby – An Ace in a Day

Pacific Paratrooper

n a dramatic painting by Roy Grinnell, Lieutenant (j.g.) Willis Hardy, a member of Crosby’s VF-17 Squadron from the carrier USS Hornet, flames a Japanese kamikaze plane that was on its way to attack the American naval task force off Okinawa, April 6, 1945. The Hellcat’s distinctive “white checkerboard” markings show it belongs to the USS Hornet (CV12).

As Ted Crosby watched, Yamato’s giant, 18-inch guns hit the water, their enormous weight probably helping the battleship capsize. Suddenly, Yamato’s No. 1 magazine exploded, sending up a huge coil of smoke and flame that could be seen for over 100 miles. It was a strange foretaste of the atomic mushroom clouds that would envelope Hiroshima and Nagasaki a few months later.

Watching from above, Crosby had no feeling of elation. “I was thinking of the Japanese crew,” he said in a 2011 interview. “Three thousand lives lost.”  As a former…

IDB Jamaica civil society group calls for establishment of National Commission on COVID-19

Petchary's Blog

Yesterday (Friday, March 5) Jamaica recordedits highest ever number of new cases (527). In the past seven days, 29 people have died from COVID-19 and we have had around two thousand new cases. We have COVID-19 cases in every community, in every parish. As we are still waiting for the vaccine (the first batch of which I understand is on its way from India, although the Ministry of Health and Wellness has not confirmed this yet) we need to be focusing on what’s happening on the ground.

There is clearly something missing; as numbers soar and the 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew remains in place, Jamaicans continue to flout COVID-19 protocols and regulations at every turn. It is not only parties, but also large gatherings at funerals, burials, in churches, crowds of people outside government offices; vendors not wearing masks at markets; and so on. A two-week ban…

Ohio official Lee Wong removes shirt, shows off scars to call out anti-Asian violence: ‘Is this patriot enough?’ – The Washington Post

Ever since he moved to the United States from China more than a half-century ago, Lee Wong has been told he doesn’t look American enough. Despite his 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, he says his patriotism has also been questioned by people who “can’t get over this face.”

So when Wong called out the uptick in violence and discrimination against Asian Americans during a meeting of the board of trustees in West Chester Township, Ohio, the board chairman calmly unbuttoned his dress shirt to show those in attendance at the Tuesday meeting what patriotism looked like: red scars across his chest from his military service.

“Here is my proof,” said Wong, 69, who last year ran as a Republican candidate for the state Senate. “Now, is this patriot enough?”

France sees further rise in Covid-19 patients in intensive care | RNZ News (Me: Dead and critically ill citizens do not support the economy!!!)

Doctors warn intensive care units in worse-hit regions could become overwhelmed and many say the government most go beyond partial lockdown measures. French President Emmanuel Macron this week defended his decision to not impose a third lockdown, but said further restrictions would probably be needed.

Serbia Hails Chinese Companies as Saviors, but Locals Chafe at Costs – The New York Times

Activists concede that air pollution levels in Bor have fallen since protests, but say that the main danger has now shifted to towns and villages to the south, where hundreds of Chinese workers brought in by Zijin are developing one of the world’s biggest unexploited copper deposits, and digging for gold.

The earth around the new mine trembles from blasting work and the heavy trucks, driven by Chinese workers, that rumble along roads adorned with China’s red national flag. Rivers and streams are discolored by effluent.

The government has added to public anger by issuing expropriation orders so that Zijin can build access roads and expand its mine. Dragan Viacic, a farmer, said he had received a letter from Serbia’s finance ministry informing him that he must sell 13 acres of his land at a fraction of the market price.

“They said this was necessary in the public interest but in reality this is just the interest of the Chinese,” he said.
