Genghis Khan (1162-1227 AD) was the founder of the Mongol Empire and his eldest son started the Yuan dynasty in China. In the Mongolian language Genghis means ‘great and powerful’ and Khan means chief or king. It was named after it unified all the tribes of the Mongolian prairie but its real name was Temujin, which historians think meant ‘fine steel’. Temujin was born into the family of a tribal chief but his father was poisoned by the Tartars when he was still a child. The family was then abandoned by their tribe and lived in poverty and had to go through many great difficulties living as nomads and without protection…
When Genghis Khan died in 1227, aged 72, his empire also included all of Central Asia, Iran, Pakistan, Korea and southern Russia, a territory four times larger than that conquered by Alexander the Great. .
He was a great strategist, showed exceptional ability in building alliances or isolating the enemy and showed great tolerance towards the traditions or customs of the conquered populations, provided they offered him loyalty. Along its territorial expansion, many religions such as Buddhism, Taoism and Islam were then introduced to Mongolia.
