WHO says Covid pandemic is growing ‘exponentially’ at more than 4.4 million new cases a week

The WHO said the trajectory of the pandemic is now “growing exponentially” at more than 4.4 million new Covid-19 cases. Maria Van Kerkhove, the agency’s technical lead for Covid-19, said “we’re in a critical point of the pandemic.” “This is not the situation we want to be in 16 months into a pandemic where we have proven control measures,” she said.

Jim Crow 2.0?

In Saner Thought

These days a common theme in most political talks shows is the use of the term “Jim Crow”.

Personally I do not like the term “Jim Crow 2.0” for I do not think that it tells the whole story.

Too many have NO idea what is meant about Jim Crow laws….call it what it is…..

Many of our states are in the process of suppressing voters rights…..and the debate centers around an old law from days past…..the Jim Crow laws….

But what the Hell are these laws?

About time for some clarity.

“Jim Crow” has long been a derogatory slang term for a black man, making it a fitting name for the laws that were in force in the South and some border states from 1877 through the mid-1960s. These laws were in place to maintain racial segregation after the Civil War ended. Initially, Jim Crow laws required the separation…

Medicare For All: pay taxes and get healthcare. Never get a bill. For profit health care: pay taxes and then pay EXTRA for healthcare that has co-pays and deductibles when you use it. Health expert pushes back on Texas governor’s herd immunity claim | TheHill

“We absolutely are not declaring victory at this time. We remain very vigilant and guarded and proactive in our response, but there is simple math behind the reason why still we continue to have success,” Abbott said on “Fox News Sunday,” adding later that “very simply, it’s a whole lot more difficult for COVID-19 to be spreading to other people in the state of Texas.” “I don’t know what herd immunity is, but when you add that to the people who have immunity, it looks like it could be very close to herd immunity,” Abbott added. But Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist and director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy who advised President Biden’s coronavirus team, cast doubt on Abbott’s estimation.  “There is no way on God’s green earth that Texas is anywhere even close to herd immunity,” Osterholm told The New York Times. “Look no further than Michigan and Minnesota, which have much higher rates of vaccination than Texas. And we’re already seeing widespread transmission.”

Danes vaccinate 100,000 people in a day to test system – The Washington Post

Denmark’s Health Minister declared Monday “the big vaccine day,” with 100,000 people to be vaccinated in one day as officials test the system ahead of a June rollout where four times as many people as that will be vaccinated each day.

The shots will be given in 68 inoculation centers across the country of nearly 6 million. The number will be lower Tuesday.

Minister Magnus Heunicke said Danes will “set a new record,” and urged people to arrive on time and have high spirits.

England pubs reopen as lockdown eases but what about the snow – The Washington Post (Me: Look for new spike in Covid-19 cases by end of April… sorry… pessimistic)

With excitement in the air that life may finally be returning to some sense of normalcy after three national lockdowns and more than 127,000 lives lost to the coronavirus, Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Brits to “behave responsibly” as restrictions lift across the four nations (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). According to Britain’s Beer and Pub Association, an estimated 15 million pints will be consumed in England this week — despite the low temperatures.

More than 100 CEOs discuss ways to combat bills curbing voting access – Axios

Saturday’s call between company executives “shows they are not intimidated by the flack. They are not going to be cowed,” Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a Yale management professor and one of the call’s organizers, told the Post. “They felt very strongly that these voting restrictions are based on a flawed premise and are dangerous,” Sonnenfeld said. Sonnenfeld also noted that some of the companies on the call included representatives from Starbucks, Linkedin, Levi Strauss and Boston Consulting Group.
