‘Hear My Voice’ Book Offers Powerful & Harrowing Testimonies From Children Detained at Border

The book is called Hear My Voice (Escucha Mi Voz) and it features the testimonies of children who have been detained at the U.S.-Mexico border. The powerful words are only emphasized by the incredible artwork produced by Latinx artists who capture the heartbreaking and frightening things that children see and hear when they are in the custody of the U.S. government.

“This book offers an opportunity to better understand human migration and children’s rights by compassionately introducing this difficult topic while providing an urgent call to action and simple steps to help,” Project Amplify said about the book. “We know that our policymakers will only move forward with important changes to immigration policies if engaged citizens continue to demand action.”

Opinion | How to Defeat Myanmar’s Military After the Coup – The New York Times

On March 31, the C.R.P.H. announced the repeal of the 2008 Constitution, which was drafted by a previous junta, and proposed a Federal Democracy Charter, a road map for building a new federal democratic union of Myanmar — with a military subject to civilian oversight and greater representation for ethnic minority groups.

The document lays out a plan for setting up transitional institutions, particularly an interim government of national unity. Its drafting was the collective effort of the C.R.P.H., various ethnic groups, political parties, civil society organizations and leaders of the civil disobedience movement. It represents an unprecedented show of unity behind a vision for a new Myanmar.

We ask governments, particularly among our neighbors, to formally recognize the C.R.P.H. and its current government as Myanmar’s only legitimate governing authority and to provide us with financial and technical assistance.

The people of Myanmar are ready to take great risks and pay a great price for their rights and freedom. We ask the international community to support them, with coordinated political, financial and security measures.

‘Alarm is growing’: Michigan governor faces shutdown dilemma as Covid cases rise | Michigan | The Guardian (Me: forget fatigue – enact new short term restrictions, save lives.)

“It’s not a sensible approach and it’s not an evidence-based strategy, if you run the numbers,” he said. “It’s a convenient approach to call for something, but it doesn’t erase the need for a lockdown now.”

That view was echoed by the chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Rochelle Walensky. The Biden administration has so far declined to send Michigan additional vaccines as it sticks with its proportional distribution plan – another difficulty for Whitmer – but vaccinations alone may not be the answer to Michigan’s problems, said Walensky.

“When you have an acute situation, an extraordinary number of cases like we have in Michigan, the answer is not necessarily to give vaccines,” Walensky said. “The answer to that is to really close things down, to go back to our basics, to go back to where we were last spring, last summer and to shut things down, to flatten the curve, to decrease contact with one another, to test … to contact trace.”

Still, the urgency and pressure from Whitmer’s allies has not persuaded the governor, who at a recent press conference said fresh lockdowns would be less effective because people are tired of the pandemic and the rules.

Scarborough weighed in on Jordan’s latest attack against Fauci during a House hearing on the pandemic after the network aired a clip of the heated exchange from the day before.

Indian vaccine maker asks US to ease export curbs – The Washington Post

Stéphane Bancel, chief executive officer for Moderna, said Tuesday in an online event that export embargoes were also preventing American vaccine makers from exporting shots globally and resulting in shortages. “If we are to truly unite in beating this virus, on behalf of the vaccine industry outside the U.S., I humbly request you to lift the embargo of raw material exports out of the U.S. so that vaccine production can ramp up,” wrote Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India.

Separately, 10 Democratic senators are urging Biden to back India and South Africa’s appeal to the World Trade Organization to temporarily relax intellectual property rules so coronavirus vaccines can be manufactured by nations that are struggling to inoculate their populations.

The lawmakers, in a letter delivered to the White House on Thursday evening, wrote that Biden should “prioritize people over pharmaceutical company profits” and support the temporary waiver of the rules. A waiver, which is supported by more than 100 nations, could pave the way for generic or other manufacturers to make more vaccines.

Myanmar coup foes tout minority-backed shadow government – The Washington Post

Opponents of Myanmar’s ruling junta went on the political offensive Friday, declaring they have formed an interim national unity government with members of Aung San Suu Kyi’s ousted cabinet and major ethnic minority groups.

The move comes on the eve of a diplomatic initiative to solve Myanmar’s crisis by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which is expected to hold a summit next week.

Big Chile study finds Chinese vaccine slashes COVID deaths – The Washington Post

A real-world study of millions of Chileans who had received the Chinese-developed CoronaVac vaccine has found it 67% effective against symptoms and 80% against death from COVID-19, the South American country’s Health Ministry said Friday.

Ministry adviser Rafael Araos said the study covered 10.5 million people, including 2.5 million who had received both doses of the vaccine and 1.5 million who had received a single dose between Feb. 2 and April 1.

It counted cases starting 14 days after application of the second dose of the vaccine, which in Chile was given 28 days after the first.

The vaccine has been widely used across the world, though not in the United States or Europe.
