A suspicious package containing unbleached flour was received at the California secretary of state’s headquarters in Sacramento, in what appears to be the latest in a series of suspicious packages sent to election officials across the country, officials reported Thursday afternoon.
In total, suspicious packages have been sent to election officials in at least 15 other states, officials said. The source of the Sacramento package is unknown.
On Tuesday, the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service launched an investigation into suspicious packages sent to election officials in more than a dozen states, including Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Rhode Island, Mississippi and Connecticut.

Ohio city’s mayor issues emergency order over false migrant rumors | Ohio | The Guardian
In recent days, following Donald Trump, JD Vance and other rightwing politicians publicly repeating falsehoods about the city’s Haitian immigrants eating other locals’ pets, the city has received more than 30 bomb threats against its schools, government buildings and city officials’ homes.
On Wednesday, local outlets reported multiple clinics and grocery stores across the city being forced to evacuate because of bomb threats. Among the establishments forced to evacuate were two branches of Walmart, one Kroger supermarket, as well as the Pregnancy Resource Center of Clark county and Planned Parenthood in Springfield.

In response to the spread of the false rumors on social media, then taken up full throat by Trump, the Republican nominee for president, and his running mate Vance, Ohio’s governor, Mike DeWine, also a Republican, said such escalations by national figures were “very hurtful” to the Haitian migrant community, adding: “They need to stop.”
On Tuesday, Vance defended his comments about Haitian migrants eating pets, saying at a Wisconsin rally that “the media has a responsibility to factcheck” stories, rather than the candidate or his campaign. Earlier this week, Vance admitted on CNN that he was willing to “create stories” to get media attention.
Trump and Vance have been told repeatedly by various authorities in Springfield and Ohio that the rumors about pets and animals such as local ducks are not true.

Brazil top judge accuses X of ‘willful’ circumvention of court-ordered block | X | The Guardian
In the latest round of the dispute between Elon Musk and Brazil’s top court, a senior judge has accused X of a “willful, illegal and persistent” effort to circumvent a court-ordered block – and imposed a fine of R$5m ($921,676) for each day the social network remains online.
The social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which has been banned by court order since 30 August, on Wednesday became accessible to many users in Brazil after an update that used cloud services offered by third parties, such as Cloudflare, Fastly and Edgeuno.
This allowed some Brazilian users to access X without the need for a VPN – which is also prohibited in the country.
Late on Wednesday, X described its reappearance in Brazil as an “inadvertent and temporary service restoration to Brazilian users”.
But the influential supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes – who ordered the original ban as part of an attempt to crack down on anti-democratic, far-right voices – on Thursday described the move as a deliberate attempt “to circumvent the court’s blocking order”.
Moraes said that the tactic was “confessed directly by its largest shareholder, Elon Musk, in a post on X addressed to the entire country”.
This was a reference to a message by Musk who on Wednesday posted: “Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.”
According to Moraes, this left “no doubt that the X platform – under the direct command of Elon Musk – intends, once again, to disrespect Brazil’s judiciary”.
