How Politics Saves Lives – The New York Times

On a Sunday in July 2014, a man boarded a plane in Monrovia, Liberia, and flew to Lagos, Nigeria. He felt sick with a fever when the trip began and was in worse shape by the time he landed. The Nigerian authorities took him to a hospital, where doctors eventually diagnosed Ebola.

From that first patient, infections soon began to spread in Lagos, which is Africa’s most densely populated city. It was the most terrifying period during any Ebola outbreak, Dr. Thomas Frieden, the former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has said.

But two months later, the crisis was over. Nigeria had no more Ebola cases, and fewer than 10 people, including the man from Liberia, had died. How did Nigeria prevent an epidemic? It wasn’t science, or at least not science as people typically define it. It was more basic than that.

Le fate del bosco

le pagine dei nostri libri

vintage-1721929_640

Anche quell’anno in primavera

le fate del bosco fecero fiorire

le primule che si trovarono, così,

abbracciate alle odorose verbene

ed all’edera sfrontata e vigorosa.

morbida e scontrosa.

Dread No More

Shayan's Sphere

Dread no more the darkling sky,
Nay, the thousand vicious blows;
For the gloom is brief and so shall die
Like weird feeling that daily goes.

And again shall shine the golden sun,
And soon shall flow the tender breeze;
And play the kids, do leap and run
In the fair meadows with charming trees.

And again shall rush in human breast
The endless streams of tranquil words,
And soon shall sing the beaming chests
With the sweet rhythms of warbling birds.

So lose not hope in the stygian cage
But recall rather by wiping tears,
Those heroic stories of bygone age
Heard and praised in the yesteryears.

And recall rather, do wake and take
Those sterling features of thy own race;
Recall how they for others’ sake
Had fought and died with a smile on face.

And recall how they had faced such days
With aches in heart and…

True Happiness is Internal

Saania's diary - reflections, learnings, sparkles

The other day when I was texting a friend, I noticed how impatient and grumpy I felt when she didn’t reply and get back to me. There were similar instances with other people wherein I felt irked the same way. However, it made me wonder why my happiness is dependent on external factors. And, ultimately, just how wrong this is!

We haven’t actually ever been taught to look inside of ourselves. Our worlds are not exactly set up to help us discover our personal boundaries in pursuit of growth, and we are therefore encouraged to cling onto external events in the hopes that we will be happy after, and with the hopes that they will calm our troubled hearts and minds. But quite fortunately enough, true happiness can be found within us.

Internal happiness is when our happiness is influenced by our own realizations, mindsets or thought processes. The weight…

Not Rasputin

themacbit

A man once said, “True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing”. We are talking about Socrates, the great Greek philosopher (470 BCE to 399 BCE). He died defending his ideas and beliefs adamantly before the law. Ironically, he fought that he knew he knew nothing.

He knew he knew nothing? Nothing? Which dimension are we talking in?

Once, an oracle announced, that no one is wiser than Socrates. Baffled by this news, Socrates went on a search to find someone wiser than him, to prove his friend wrong 😆. As you might have guessed, he never found one.

Socrates himself wrote nothing, his ideas were spread by his small circle of followers. His admirers consider him as a man of great insight, wisdom, and analytic skills. I am mostly fascinated by the events leading to his death. (Rasputin, you listening? )
