The Generosity of Plants — Micro of the Macro

This week, I’ve begun reading The Well-Gardened Mind: The Restorative Power of Nature by Sue Stuart-Smith.  The book presents various research findings on working with Nature and draws beautiful parallels between gardening and developing a healthy mindset.  Stuart-Smith is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and her book was chosen by The Times, Britain’s oldest national daily […]

Biden Discloses Some of Trump’s Secret Drone Strike Rules (Me: Good move to moderate strikes)

The Biden administration suspended the Trump-era rules on its first day in office and imposed an interim policy of requiring White House approval for proposed strikes outside of the war zones of Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. At the same time, the Biden team began a review of how both Obama- and Trump-era policies had worked — both on paper and in practice — with an eye toward developing its own policy. Israel’s Iron Dome missile system causing cancer among soldiers, finds report | PNN

At least 10 Israeli soldiers, in their 20s and 30s, said at the end of their military service or after they were discharged that they had developed cancer following their stint with the Iron Dome unit, according to an investigative report by the Hebrew-language Yedioth Ahronoth daily newspaper.

They called the radar box of the Iron Dome system, which intercepts short-range missiles, “the toaster.”

“When you are near the radar box, you feel your whole body boiling on the inside,” Yonatan Haimovitz, 31, served for two years in the Israeli air force before being re-stationed to an Iron Dome battery, said.

“You imagine this is how food feels inside a microwave. You feel the heat waves,” he added.

At the age of 22, doctors discovered that Haimovitz had a tumor.

“It was a lump in my neck about that size of a ping pong ball sitting on the main artery and stopping blood flow. I went through chemotherapy and radiation treatment,” he said.

“They never equipped us against the radiation,” Shir Tahar, who was diagnosed with leukemia ten months after finishing her military service, said.

‘They tossed us out like garbage’: The Palestinians who lost their Jerusalem homes – +972 Magazine

Ihab Hassan Ali stands on the remains of his family home in Shuafat Refugee Camp, East Jerusalem. (Rachel Shor) Here’s a dry statistic: according to numbers provided by human rights group Ir Amim, a record high 140 Palestinian families in East Jerusalem lost their homes in 2020. In 2019, 72 Palestinian families from Jerusalem saw their homes demolished, while in 2018 the number was 59. Most of these people, who watched as bulldozers rammed through the walls of their homes, are invisible in the eyes of the Israeli public. They become a statistic. But every demolished home brings with it a total upheaval for the family with repercussions that last years — far beyond the demolition itself. Scouring billions of links for 6 years showed us the web is both expanding and shrinking

We analysed more than six billion user comments from the social media website Reddit dating back to 2006, as well as 11.8 billion Twitter posts from as far back as 2011. In total, our research used a massive 5.6Tb trove of data from more than a decade of global activity.

Web diversity is nosediving.

In fact, between 60—70% of all attention on key social media platforms is focused towards just ten popular domains.

Beyond social media platforms, we also studied linkage patterns across the web, looking at almost 20 billion links over three years. These results reinforced the “rich are getting richer” online.

The authority, influence and visibility of the top 1,000 global websites (as measured by network centrality or PageRank) is growing every month, at the expense of all other sites.

Alphabet soup for the soul – “R”

Words from Walden

R is for Remembering

“Can you remeber who you were, before the world told you who you should be”

-Charles Bukowski-

Babies and toddlers innately know what to do? They do not have to be taught or learn, they just know. It also helps that they believe in themselves, have a faith in themselves and desire that is unwavering. Conversley and most importantly they do not doubt themselves.

Have you ever seen a toddler learning to walk? How many times do they fall down?

Not only do they get back up every single time but they eventually reach their end goal. This single metaphor tackles many areas inherent to success, such as;

  1. Always get back up

2. Do not ever stop trying to reach your goal

3. Do not entertain “no” or “impossible as an option

A toddler will learn how to walk because they never entertain the idea that…

Filosofa Takes on Mitch

Amen – word!

Filosofa's Word

Mitch McConnell has found a permanent home on my radar, it would seem.  Every day he says or does something to spark my temper and this week he’s been on a veritable roll.

Mitch McConnell, aka Moscow Mitch, says we don’t matter!

I have never been a fan of the ignoble, inglorious Mitch McConnell, but now he has crossed my red line.  Referring to President Biden’s plan to increase taxes on corporations and on the wealthy (such as Mitch himself), McConnell claimed he would not support Biden’s infrastructure plan because of the “massive tax increases on all the productive parts of our economy.”  Think about that one for a minute, friends.  “All the productive parts of our economy” in Mitch’s mind, are the wealthy like himself.  We, the people who have worked 40+ hours per week every week of our adult lives, the people who built the cars, mined…

CCP President Donald Generals
Community College of Philadelphia President Donald Generals says the program “is a national model to show that level of resource support for education and for higher education.”

Elijah Robinson, said what drew him in was graduating with a high school diploma and an associate degree. “It was a no-brainer. My experience at Parkway was probably the greatest high school experience. My teachers were supportive,” he said. Parkway Center City Middle College, the first-of-its-kind in the state, is a program that offers many first-generation college-bound students the opportunity to earn an associate degree in liberal arts from the Community College of Philadelphia (CCP), while also earning their high school diploma. Donald “Guy” Generals, president of CCP, praised the partnership. “This is a national model to show that level of resource support for education and for higher education, post-secondary education and a way to further advance this idea that education needs to go beyond the 12th grade,” he said. Students at the school can end up graduating high school and go right into their junior year of college, if they choose to pursue a higher education.
