How does Indonesia’s palm oil industry fuel the climate crisis? – Palm Oil Detectives

Booming global demand for palm oil in biofuel is spurring deforestation in Indonesia. Indonesia accounts for more than half of the global palm oil supply, the world’s most widely used vegetable oil that is found in everything from food to cosmetics to fuel.

But environmentalists fear surging demand for the product may drive mass deforestation in Indonesia, home to the world’s third-largest tropical rainforest, and exacerbate the global climate crisis.

Refugees in New Hampshire turn to farming for income, taste of home | PBS News

Most workers at this Dunbarton farm are refugees who have escaped harrowing wars and persecution. They come from the African nations of Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia and Congo, and they now run their own small businesses, selling their crops to local markets as well as to friends and connections in their ethnic communities. Farming provides them with both an income and a taste of home.

“I like it in the USA. I have my own job,” says Somali refugee and farmer Khadija Aliow as she hams it up by sashaying past a reporter, using one hand to steady the crate of crops on her head and the other to give a thumbs-up. “Happy. I’m so happy.”

The farm is owned by a New Hampshire-based nonprofit, the Organization for Refugee and Immigrant Success, which lets the farmers use plots of land and provides them with training and support. The organization runs similar farms in Concord and the nearby town of Boscawen.

In all, 36 people from five African countries, including South Sudan, and the Asian nation of Nepal work on the farms. Many were farmers in their home countries before coming to the U.S. or had previous experience with agriculture, said Tom McGee, a program director with the nonprofit.

“These are farmers who are basically independent business owners, who are working in partnership with our organization to be able to bring this produce to life in this country,” he said. “And to have another sense of purpose, and a way that they can bring themselves into the community, and belong. And really participate in the American dream.”

You never deserved my YES – Belladonna’s Flashlight

Listen up here, cowboy! You never deserved my YES, but for some odd reason, I gave it to you anyway, and now I regret it.

You slid into my life looking delicious and warm, and I thought you were kind and good for my soul. However, over the years, I have come to find out that you, YOU, are the worst thing and, at the same time, the best thing I’ve ever had the pleasure of biting.

And I’m hooked on you!

From that point on, all you heard from me was YES.

Yes, I’ll have seconds

Yes, I’ll have thirds

Yes, I’ll be back at midnight

Yes, I’ll have more tomorrow

Yes, I’ll hide you so no one else can have any

Yes, I’m greedy

Now look at me, locked in a fierce battle to shed this stubborn weight that clings to me like a loyal friend. No matter how hard I try to shake you off, you persist, grinning and saying, ‘We’re in this together, forever, Besties, until the end.’

But I refuse to accept that fate!

You never deserved my yes, but since I gave it to you, I will continue to say yes because you are delicious. But I’ll tell you this: I have a concrete plan that will ensure that I can enjoy you and stay fitish.

The Plan Because I can’t say NO

  • Drinking plenty of water is a must; at least half your body weight every day
  • Getting the appropriate amount of sleep, you’ll know the amount when you feel rested and brand new in the morning,
  • Have your weights ready to go and work on your upper body and lower body on separate days
  • Eat healthy and earn that delicious treat

Don’t eat it often, but everything is welcomed in moderation.
And all though these brownies may not deserve my yes, I’ll give to them anyway.

You could have chosen any blog to read, but you chose mine, and I’m honored!
