Israeli unrest: Arab citizens protest over Gaza and Jerusalem – The Washington Post

“It was like a war here,” said Yousef, 35, a resident of the mixed city of Ramle in central Israel, who declined to give his last name for fear of arrest. He accused Israeli police of failing to stop religious Jews from assaulting people outside his mosque and instead attacking local Arabs.

In Ramle, videos circulated of right-wing Israelis pelting cars driven by Arabs. In nearby Lod, close to Israel’s international airport, Arabs attacked several synagogues and shops. And clashes and rioting erupted in other Israeli cities, including Haifa, Acre and Sakhnin.

Uruguay coronavirus: Cases, deaths surge in South American nation – The Washington Post (Me: Brazil’s inaction has heavy costs ofr its neighbors)

Analysts blame a range of factors, from a breakdown in social distancing to the arrival of the P.1 variant, spawned next door in Brazil. The popular sportscaster Alberto Sonsol died in April, as did a pregnant woman — a first for the country — and then another.

“The situation is dramatic,” said epidemiologist Jacqueline Ponzo, who serves on an interdisciplinary panel that studies coronavirus data. “I don’t usually like to use adjectives to explain these things, but it really is fitting.”

The government has been adding hospital beds to meet the surge, but the health system is struggling to staff intensive care units, and the primary care system, where most coronavirus patients are treated, is showing signs of saturation.

Israel-Gaza violence: Netanyahu and Hamas could gain politically – The Washington Post

The sudden escalation of violence between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza could offer a boon to the leaders of both camps — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas militants — who have been struggling and scraping to salvage their political standing.

11 Reasons to Keep Wearing a Mask After You’re Vaccinated and the Pandemic is “Over”

    1. You 100% do not want to get Covid-19.
    2. You are immunocompromised. Millions of people have immune conditions that make contracting Covid-19 much more dangerous for them.
    3. You’re traumatized from “the mental and emotional toll of the last year”.
    4. Because you need to be around people you suspect may not be vaccinated or taking Covid-19 seriously (e.g. as part of your job).
    5. You’re not feeling well and want to make sure to protect others around you.
    6. Because you want to signal to others that you are being safe and thinking of the health and wellness of those around you.
    7. You live in a household with unvaccinated people (kids, for example) and want to make sure to protect them.
    8. Because your personal risk tolerance is lower than other people’s.
    9. You need some time to feel comfortable enough taking your mask off around others after more than a year of that very behavior being dangerous.
    10. Because you want to.
    11. But mostly because… (Click below to read rest of the post)

Virility & The Virus: COVID found in penile tissue, may even lead to erectile dysfunction (ED) – Study Finds (Me: get vaccinated!)

“This suggests that men who develop COVID-19 infection should be aware that erectile dysfunction could be an adverse effect of the virus, and they should go to a physician if they develop ED symptoms,” Dr. Ramasamy suggests.

Just like so many other conditions being linked to COVID, like increased risk of heart disease or neurological symptoms, researchers say the nerve damage caused by the coronavirus may cause ED, or it may only worsen the condition.

Additionally, earlier research involving Dr. Ramasamy reveals evidence that COVID-19 can invade the testicles of some infected men.

“These latest findings are yet another reason that we should all do our best to avoid COVID-19,” adds first author Eliyahu Kresch, a medical student working with Dr. Ramasamy.

“We recommend vaccination and to try to stay safe in general,” Kresch concludes.

Democratic DA candidates go head to head as May 18 primary looms | Local News | phillytrib.com

WURD radio hosted a district attorney Democratic candidates debate Wednesday, as the race between Larry Krasner and Carlos Vega intensifies before the May 18 primary.

When asked about Krasner’s ongoing tensions with the police union, Krasner said they distinguish between the police department led by Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and the leadership of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

Krasner said his relationship with the higher-level brass within the police department is “quite good” and that is entirely different than a relationship with John McNesby, who leads the FOP.

So far, (FOP president) McNesby “has defended the wearing of Nazi tattoos in uniform by a Philadelphia police officer while on duty. He has permitted members of the Proud Boys into the officers’ only area of FOP Hall to drink beer with police officers,” Krasner said. “A couple of months before the insurrection (he) referred to Black Lives Matter as ‘a pack of rabid animals’. He plays to the retired membership because most of the members of the FOP are retired. And so, he is not the voice of the present; he is not the voice of the police department.”

First Balloon Sighting

Michael Stephen Wills Photography

Pam and I enjoyed the local hot air balloon for the first time in 2021 floating directly in front of our home, along the valley formed by hills on the east and west, headed north toward Cayuga Lake and descending steadily, looked to have landed close by. I heard the “whoosh, whoosh” of the gas burner first and distinct from a jet landing at Tompkins County airport. Always a thrill to see one up close.

Wondering Wednesdays, Baby Acres, Chapter 1, part 1

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This post continues the rough draft of  Chapter 1 of my non-fiction WiP, Baby Acres.  And it now has words!  🙂     I’m posting the first outline section, chapter 1, section IA, warts and all, so please be forgiving here, dear readers.  At the moment it is the best I can do.  This was only meant to be about 250-300 words, but I got a little, well, verbose, at 580 words, I guess.

I’ve also realized, or remembered, rather, from my thesis writing, that putting the outline up front and then the verbage, or writing the words, later, is a mess.   It is easier than having a separate spreadsheet for the outline and wordcount (though that process does work better for me when I am writing a novel, perhaps because there are so many more threads to keep track of, and also because I often struggle to hit my initial…
