The Man Who Told America the Truth About D-Day – The New York Times

During his four years as a war correspondent, Pyle was embraced by enlisted men, officers and a huge civilian public as a voice who spoke for the common infantryman. With his trauma in France, he had become one of them. After sharing so much of their experience, he understood how gravely war can alter the people who have to see it and fight it and live it. He knew that the survivors can come home with damage that is profound, painful and long-lasting. It was a truth that he found hard or even impossible to communicate to the readers back home — and it is a truth that is still difficult and troubling now, 75 years after D-Day.

We accept that our wars are different now — more scattered, seemingly never-ending, against a more diffuse and elusive enemy — but those wars are still presented with the promise that we are fighting for our way of life or the survival of our values, and that we’ll enjoy greater peace and security when those wars are won. War reporting has become more honest and unsparing about tallying the death toll — at least on our side — but politicians making the case for deployments and invasions still don’t invite the public in advance to decide whether the promised benefits will be worth the losses.

Seeing and reporting the vast losses on the beach at Normandy and watching war’s meat grinder in action in the vicious battles that followed, Pyle was evidently forced to recalculate the arithmetic of victories and losses. By the time he was killed, 10 months later and on the opposite side of the world, the lesson seemed to have solidified for him. Not even the war ending, not even victory — which his previous reporting usually kept in sight as the great goal of the war — would be able to bring back all the people killed or counteract the damage done to the survivors. Pyle had written about battles and war in a way that promised hope. By the time victory was actually in sight, he had come to feel that there was no way the war could be a story with a happy ending…

Scamdemic
Pandemic
Endless epidemic
Made me weak
No exercise
No sleep
Made me sick
Sitting at home
Weary to the bone
Am always on the phone
Feeling all alone

If vaccine is the cure
I took it
I feel sick all the more
I wonder what is in store

Will death come before?
Or will they kill us
With another lockdown
Bulldozing the economy into breaking down
Sword of Damocles hanging on heads like a thorny crown.

Pharma mongers plunder
Throwing vulnerabilities asunder
Masses knuckle under
The big powers big blunder
Politicians puny worth
The muck, the scum of earth
Weapons of masked destruction, sanitizers , the works
A sanity rush going berserk

Destroying mankind’s pulse
The ruckus of a black fungus ..

I check to see if my oximeter still works ..

Zanzibar sunset

Google translation of introduction: Do you speak Swahili? This is the most common question you hear about how you descend into Stone Town, the historic city, the old Zanzibar city.

ore de drum

Stone Town, 2018

Vorbești swahili ?

20180224_130615

Federal Unemployment Aid Is Now a Political Lightning Rod – The New York Times

Most economists say there is no clear, single explanation yet for the difficulty that some employers are having in hiring. Government relief may play a role in some cases, but so could a lack of child care, continuing fears about infection, paltry wages, difficult working conditions and normal delays associated with reopening a mammoth economy.

The particular complaints that government benefits are sapping the desire to work have, nonetheless, struck a chord among Republican political leaders.

In Ms. Starr’s case, Ms. Reynolds’s move to end federal jobless relief in Iowa is likely to have its intended effect.

Ms. Starr can be counted among the long-term unemployed. She has relied on a mix of pandemic-related benefits since last spring, when she left her job as a delivery driver for Domino’s Pizza after co-workers started getting ill.

She could probably have already gotten her job back; Domino’s in Des Moines is advertising for drivers. But Ms. Starr has been reluctant to apply.

“A lot of people in Iowa don’t wear masks — they think that Covid is fake,” said Ms. Starr, who worries not only about her own susceptibility to infection but also about the health of her 71-year-old father, whom she helps care for: He has emphysema, diabetes and heart troubles.

An early withdrawal from the federal government’s network of jobless relief programs affects everyone in the state who collects unemployment insurance. Ms. Starr, like all recipients, will lose a weekly $300 federal stipend that was designed to supplement jobless benefits, which generally replace a fraction of someone’s previous wage. In most of the states, the decision will also end Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, which covers freelancers, part-timers and self-employed workers who are not normally eligible for unemployment insurance. And it will halt Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, which continues paying people who have exhausted their regular allotment.

In addition to the $300 supplement, Ms. Starr gets $172 a week in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. The total is about $230 less than she earned at her previous job. The government checks pay for her rent, food and some of her father’s medicine, she said.

Ms. Starr, who is vaccinated, said the governor’s order would probably force her to go back to work despite her health fears. She is thinking about some kind of customer service job from her home, although that would require her to buy a laptop and maybe get landline telephone service, she said. Absent that, she said, she may have to take another delivery job or work in an office.

Whether her case is evidence that ending jobless benefits early makes sense depends on one’s perspective.

A Cautionary Tale

cancer treatment and follow up…

In Saner Thought

This is a cautionary tale for all those cancer survivors that had radiation treatment after their surgery.

I needed to consult with my better half, Sue before writing this post because there is some personal information enclosed that I wanted to clear with her before writing.

We talked it over and she gave me the all clear to include the info as I saw fit.

About six years ago Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer….a lump was discovered in her breast and after consultation with her oncologist it was advised to have it removed .

The surgery was a success…they got the limp and some other lymph nodes to be sure that had removed all the cancer.

The follow-ups were encouraging and she was given massive radiation treatments to be sure that it would not return to haunt her.

After a couple of months of treatment all seemed good and…

Alphabet soup for the soul – “W”

Words from Walden

W is for Work

“I learned the value of hard work by working hard”

Margret Mead

If you do the work , you will reap the rewards. And, if you do what you love it will not feel like work (most of the time).

Working hard is not about money or fame but rather about being the best version of you that you can be for your level of consciousness at any given time.

The goal is to evolve, but personal evolution does not simply happen by creating your future from a closed trans-like state of becoming nobody and no-thing, in no time, from no place and nowhere. There is another step that is essential.

After you create your future from that meditative state , that spiritual dimension , you must re-enter the physical body and play in the 3D world of physical form.

The trick is trying…
