Submarine Warfare – July 1945

Pacific Paratrooper

Submarine tender, USS Anthedon, Australia 1945

From: the true story of America’s “wolf packs” and “life guard” teams –  “Sink ’em All”. by Vice Admiral Charles A. Lockwood Jr., USN.   “Uncle Charlie” spent 39 years in submersibles.

My long-delayed visit to Admiral Fife’s command finally got underway in a PBM from Saipan, 20 July 1945.  Cavite and Manila were pitiful to behold.  These once beautiful and picturesque Spanish-built cities lay in ruins.

On the north shore of Subic Bay, 60 miles up the coast, I found Jimmie Fife building a submarine base and rest camp in jungles where, in bygone days, we hunted wild pig and deer.  Two pile-built piers extended into the bay, while 2 American and 2 British tenders with submarines alongside, lay at anchor farther out.

Aboard the tender Anthedon, anchored off the Base, I found Cmdr. Dick Hawes, an old friend from earlier submarine…

Life’s Philosophy

Shayan's Sphere

When withered leaf departs from tree
and sings in tune her plaintive songs,
and obscure souls retire and flee
abandoning all earthly wrongs;
when sparkling stars of the mystic sky
embrace this Earth in their dreamless sleep,
and the beauteous streams with elegance dry
biding their bye to the colossal deep!
I behold the Sphere, this world of pains,
the golden crowns and the silver chains;
the hues of loathing and ill-desires
smashing this world with burning fire.
the shadows of gloom and baffling fears,
the laments of poor, their silent tears;
the terrors of wars and wild damage,
the savage diseases and worldly rage.
But still, they fear the tyrant of death
and still, they desire for tranquil whiles,
those ardent feelings with every breath
and bouquets of past with winsome smiles!
And thus they clash and thus they spread
the notice of love with blooming chests,
and then…

Saudi Arabia says hajj to be limited to 60,000 in kingdom – The Washington Post

Saudi Arabia announced Saturday this year’s hajj pilgrimage will be limited to no more than 60,000 people, all of them from within the kingdom, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement by the kingdom comes after it ran an incredibly pared-down pilgrimage last year over the virus, but still allowed a small number of the faithful to take part in the annual ceremony.

Alphabet soup for the soul – “X”

Words from Walden

X is for -” X marks the spot

“If ‘X’ marks the spot of the destination of our life journey, then ‘Y’ should be the reason we’re choosing to go”

– Cedric Crawford-

The phrase ‘X marks the spot’ has a couple of different attributions. One version is that old pirates would bury their treasure and the way they would remember where it was, was by placing an X on a map close to a landmark that they sought out as the burial site.

Another version is that it was used by the British army. When performing executions, A soldier would mark a piece of paper with an x and positioning it on the heart of someone sentenced to death.

Somewhere along the line we became less barbaric in the approach to this phrase.

For the purposes of this article you are X and X marks the spot where…

Growing And Using Thyme for Health

Ideas and Advice for How To Live a Joyful and Empowered Life.

Last summer I had one Thyme plant.

This season I have four – I started a new plant by dividing the Thyme I had and I bought 3 others.

The new 3 are Lemon Thyme, English Thyme and Pizza Thyme.

Here are some photos:

These all make a tasty tea. Sometimes I drink it on its’ own and sometimes I mix it with other herbs for flavor and more health benefits.

To make tea, use 1 tsp. dried or 1 Tbsp. fresh per cup. Put the herbs into a teapot or cup, poor boiling water over and steep at least 10 minutes, then strain. If using fresh, chop the herb so there is more exposed surface of the leaves to extract from. Sweeten with your preferred sweetener if you wish. I also use Thyme in Herbal Syrups For Health, Refreshing Ice Water and More! and Mixed Herbal Iced Tea for Health Benefits
