They Relied on Chinese Vaccines. Now They’re Battling Outbreaks. – The New York Times

In the Seychelles, Chile, Bahrain and Mongolia, 50 to 68 percent of the populations have been fully inoculated, outpacing the United States, according to Our World in Data, a data tracking project. All four ranked among the top 10 countries with the worst Covid outbreaks as recently as last week, according to data from The New York Times. And all four are mostly using shots made by two Chinese vaccine makers, Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech.

“If the vaccines are sufficiently good, we should not see this pattern,” said Jin Dongyan, a virologist at the University of Hong Kong. “The Chinese have a responsibility to remedy this.”

India’s black fungus outbreak: Recovering covid patients grapple with removal of eyes – Washington Post

When the coronavirus pandemic tore through India this year, its ferocity killed tens of thousands of people. But thousands of those who survived were soon back in hospitals with an ominous fungal infection called mucormycosis.

The complaints ranged from a blurring of vision to droopy eyelids or discharge from the nose. At high risk were diabetic people or those with very weak immune systems. In many cases, the only treatment is the removal of the fungus from the infected area — and that area is often the eye.

“It’s a form of flesh-eating fungus that destroys tissues as it grows,” said Akshay Nair, an oculoplastic surgeon treating mucormycosis patients in Mumbai. Before the pandemic, Nair would see 10 such patients in a year, but since January, he has treated nearly 100 affected patients. “If it involves the sinus, they have to be cleared. If it involves the eye — the eyeball, lids, muscles around the eye have to be removed, leaving behind the bare, bony socket.”

The antifungal drug used for treatment, amphotericin B, has run in short supply in India. The expensive drug has to be administered for at least three to five weeks after the surgery, increasing costs and complicating treatment efforts.

Doctors believe one reason for the spate of cases in India is the rampant use of steroids to treat covid-19 patients. Steroids improve outcomes in serious covid patients but also make them susceptible to this infection by pushing up blood sugar levels.

EU Sanctions Myanmar Junta Cabinet Ministers, Attorney General

The European Union (EU) imposed sanctions on Monday on eight Myanmar officials – including the country’s police and navy chiefs – responsible for deadly crackdowns on pro-democracy protests and for cutting the internet in the wake of the junta’s Feb. 1 coup.

The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes on the attorney general, five ministers and two deputy ministers and are the third round of restrictions imposed by the EU since the military takeover.

Three “economic entities” active in the gems and timber sectors, either state-owned or controlled by the military, have also had their assets frozen “to restrict the junta’s ability to profit from Myanmar’s natural resources.”

Also sanctioned is the War Veterans Organization, which provides support to former members of the Myanmar military.

You know how to contribute to a better future?

The planet is running out of time. The average surface temperature has risen 1 degree Celsius since 1800, with two thirds of this increase occurring since 1975. Only between 2007 and 2016, according to NASA, the loss of Antarctic ice tripled from a decade earlier. In Greenland, it doubled.

Tell me the story!

Inhale Peace; Exhale Love. Joy will Follow! - RUELHA

Please tell me the story.
Don't do like this, Salome!
I'm very intrigued.
In anticipation, fatigued.

I don't know what it's about.
Whether it's fantasy or something devout.
But I really want to know.
So let your words flow.

I don't want to wait.
More anxious than a blind date.
Just spill the beans.
Don't be so mean.

Since the day you gave me a teaser.
I've been more excited than a Golden Retriever.
Please find a way to narrate.
I know with me, it will resonate.

My dear Sammy,
Don't you want to see me happy?
I really want to hear that story!
Even though I'm now in the 'pestering' category.

Me wants story!
Tell me story!
Please tell na, Salome!
Or I'll trouble you like this only!

♫ We’ve Only Just Begun ♫

Filosofa's Word

In all honesty, I had a brief hour or so this evening when I decided I would stop my music posts.  A couple of friends have been hyper-critical because I play only the music that I like and am not open to their suggestions, most of which I find I simply don’t enjoy.  I have said since my very first music post that I’m open to suggestion, but if I don’t like a song you suggest, I won’t play it here.  Music, like many other things, is a matter of personal preference.  What makes me smile might make somebody else tune out, and that’s okay!  I don’t eat octopus, but I have a friend who loves it.  And that’s okay too.  So, ultimately I am not stopping my music posts and I will always welcome ideas and suggestions — just understand that if I don’t like them, I won’t play…

Death of Romany man knelt on by Czech police compared to that of George Floyd | Roma, Gypsies and Travellers | The Guardian

Video footage of a police officer kneeling on the neck of a Romany man who later died in an ambulance is being shared among Czechs on social media, leading many to compare his treatment to that of George Floyd.

The video, shot on 19 June, shows three police officers in Teplice, a town in the north of the Czech Republic, detaining a Romany man on the floor. As one officer holds the man’s feet, another appears to kneel on his neck, and a third tries to handcuff him. Voices of several Roma bystanders are heard in the video.

“Women wearing less clothes causes rapes”. “Men are not Robots!” says PM of Pakistan Imran Khan.

Beyond The Lines

Pakistan PM Imran Khan is again in talks on social media and this time for an unthoughtful comment. Imran Khan’s comment in an interview shows how narrow his mindset is towards women.

The comment made by Imran Khan has caused a massive outrage on social media, with opposition leaders and journalists expressing anger and disgust against the misogynistic ideology.

Pakistan Prime minister Imran Khan instead of accepting the poor law enforcement of the country blamed a rise in the cases of sexual violence on how women dress in the country. “If a woman is wearing very few clothes, it will have an impact on the men, unless they are robots. It’s just common sense,”. These comments were made by Imran Khan in an interview with ‘Axios on HBO’. “This is cultural imperialism. Whatever is acceptable in our culture, must be acceptable everywhere else. It’s not,” he added.

R.I.P. Bipartisanship

Filosofa's Word

I think most people see bipartisanship as the ideal way to get things done in our lawmaking branch of government known as Congress.  We’d all like to think that both Democrats and Republicans are acting in the best interest of the people of this nation and that they are taking their oaths to the Constitution seriously.  After all, we elected them and we pay their salaries, benefits and perks from our hard-earned money!  I, for one, have long felt that moderation and bipartisanship, working across the aisle, meeting halfway in the spirit of compromise was the best way to ensure that we are all served well by our elected officials.  Today, however, I honestly believe that bipartisanship is a mirage, that true cooperation between the two parties is dead, a relic of the past.  Whether or not it will ever be resurrected remains to be seen at some point in…
