How a whale named Big Mama spurred a ‘humpback comeback’ in B.C. waters – BC | Globalnews.ca

Researchers say there has been a resurgence of humpback whales off the coast of B.C. and Washington state. “They were hunted mostly for their blubber, which we use to make oil products back then and by 1910, there were zero humpback whales left in these inland waterways,” Erin Gless of the Pacific Whale Watch Association said.

“In the 1960s and 1970s is when those protective acts really went into place, there’s no more commercial hunting of humpback whales. Once that threat passed, they were able to recover, so it just goes to show you that once you do actually protect that species, they can rebound.

“It’s a great inspiration for other species that are facing similar threats.”

U.S. to Search Former Native American Schools for Children’s Remains – The New York Times

The new program, called the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, will identify the facilities and sites where there may have been student burials, as well as the tribal affiliations of the children, the Department of the Interior said.

It will also mine records from 1819 to 1969 that were kept by the department, which had oversight of the facilities, working with tribal nations, Alaska Native corporations and Native Hawaiian organizations. A final report will be sent to Ms. Haaland by April 1.

Christine Diindiisi McCleave, chief executive of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition, said that finding the graves of the missing children would be “very healing for a lot of our people.”

The Joy of Achieving.

Beyond The Lines

“It’s not what you achieve, because everyone tries to achieve something, but it’s how you achieve makes all the difference in your life”!

“It is so strange that you worry, panic, for achieving something until the last moment and as soon as you reach the end point suddenly all worries, fear, fades away in a snap”.

Today I feel like I have nothing to do and that is an uneasy feeling for me. You must have felt that too! Perhaps after an important meeting, a date, cooking, or delivering an important speech!

Tomorrow when I wake up, I will again have many things to do and learn, but today I am a free man!

“My exams are over today. I feel like a prisoner of war who was just deported back to his country”.

Yes, my head feels lighter! Do you also feel like a weight has been instantly lifted…

Nepal: Pokhara, Erholungsort und Annapurna-Trekking

Vivaldi translation of introduction: Pokhara, the second largest city in Nepal and also an important tourist destination in Nepal, is only a good 800 m high in a beautiful landscape on Lake Phewa. The city is located almost exactly in the middle of Nepal, 70 km from the Tibetan and 80 km from the Indian border. The climate is warmer than in Kathmandu and the pace is more leisurely. There are not many temples and pagodas, the main attractions are the lake, the breathtaking landscape and especially for trekkers the Annapurna massif. Before the occupation of Tibet, Pokhara was an important trading place for wool and salt between India and Tibet. It was not until 1968 that goods could be transported from India at least to Pokhara on the Siddharta Highway. After the Chinese built the Prithvi Highway in 1972, the goods could finally be brought on to Kathmandu.

Climate deniers will have a hard time explaining these to their grandchildren, the kids who are now woke to the disasters they’ve been served by blindness and greed.

Astounding find by climatestate.

I don’t usually repost content; I think it’s much better to simply offer links (though I’m aware they’re rarely followed). But exceptional times call for exceptional measures.

The story so far: I recently stumbled upon an earlier post of mine from 2018, a standard reblog from Peter Sinclair’s ‘climate crocks’ site. The post was just a video that was attended solely by Peter’s comment, above. In the comment thread on that post, Climate State (@climatestate) said of the video:

Thanks Peter for sharing, took me two days to compile this gem. Notice also that Manabe mentions briefly sea ice decline.
