Sunset, sunrise. Sunset, sunrise. Heat down, heat up. Heat down…
Same ol’, same ol’. A routine enjoyed as a child. Now, admiring the wilting, crackling brown leaves and bushes and dried out grasses, I’m less enamored of the beautiful rain-free broiler days.
Hello! Welcome to Independence Day in the U.S., the 4th of July, aka July 4, 2021. Many will celebrate the holiday with swimming and boating, grilling out, and music. Others will be working to help the rest of us celebrate independence.
We will be without fireworks this year. No parades, either. The flyover, symbolic of, um, something, would be taking place in five minutes. We’d be at Pam’s house. One of the few brick houses on Siskiyou. Built over seventy years ago, the house is a treasured mix of modern thinking, modern when it was built, modernized at different remodeling eras.

You have a sneaking feeling
(We could stop right there, but…)
That unless I have at some point
Lost
You haven’t clearly won
I have a totally examined conviction
That unless we both win
I haven’t
We together need to decide
Which it will be between us:
Win-lose or win-win?

dianeravitch The Worst Day in American History Today, as most people celebrate the Independence of our country, we think of the men and women who not only established our government but enabled it, prodded it, and compelled it—to live up to its ideals. On July 4, 1776, many Americans were not free; many did not have the right to vote or to own property or to be educated. Many did not have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” We have still not lived up to the democratic ideals that the Founding Fathers put on paper. Currently, nearly half the states have enacted or intend to enact laws making it more difficult to vote, which is an attack on the fundamental promise of democracy: one man or woman, one vote.
We have only recently learned how fragile our democracy is. On January 6, 2021, a large…

A few nights ago I played a song, Summertime, and the version I played was by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong — two of my favourites. A couple of readers noted that Janis Joplin had also covered the song, and they liked her version. I listened, but still prefer the Ella/Louis one. However, while Janis Joplin was not among my favourites growing up, but she had a few songs that I really liked and that have stuck with me through the years. Me & Bobby McGee is at the top of that list. Coincidentally, our friend John Howell mentioned this one in a comment yesterday, and thus it seemed to be kismet that I play this here tonight!
Written by Kris Kristofferson and songwriter Fred Foster, it was originally sung by Roger Miller. Often misinterpreted as a love song for Janis Joplin, the real inspiration behind Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Me…

A dying river can kill the people who depend on it after a while
If only those who make a living and use the water from it, could go the extra mile
When the people are aware that a dying river can cause them to die
It would be nice if they make the important changes because they know why?
If the Government had employed people to keep the river clean long ago
I believe the pollution would be reduced and there would be less sorrow
Water is life but when it is polluted it cause illness
It would be good if everyone could join in and help to clean up the mess

We all want to be healthy even when we grow old
For some folks, health is a lot more precious than Gold
Since the river was clean before…

What we choose to do will determine the kind of future we will have
Every day we should think of changing the way we behave
Single-use-plastic is a huge problem and that was not around in our Grandparents days
Now it is time for us help our children to understand why we should plan to change our ways
Now that there are so many concerned children out there
Saying they want to pay attention to environmental care
Adults can assist them with the plans they makeeach day
And give them ecofriendly tips so they can treat the environment in a great way

Children don’t need to grow up with the bad habits the adults had
When they learn to protect the environment we will all be glad
Many of the problems we are having now will disappear

The size of the plastic pollution problem is not known by many people, or maybe they don’t care
Maybe not much of us are interested in living in a healthy environment so we can breathe in clean air
Burned plastics release toxins and that is bad for our health
Why do we keep on supporting themanufacturers who only want to increase wealth?
It is now clear that living in a modern society means living in an unhealthy environment
As more people seem to believe that having more stuff will help them to find contentment
We have so many habits we could change so that the plastic pollution problem would be reduced
But those who only care about wealth, want to earn more so they advertise more when they produce

If we keep on thinking of growing businesses that produce more waste to discard

We can no longer see environmental protection awareness as an option we can afford to ignore
If the Summers should get any hotter, there could be a worse problem in store
It is time for us to change the way we live and try to solve the climate crisis
Even though there are people who say there is no crisis and they have become critics
Environmental protection won’t do us any harm
We will be doing something good, instead of watching as the earth gets more warm
Reducing the emissionof greenhouse gases would be an easy thing for us to do
If the developed countries would should decide to help the poor countries to make it through

Developing in a sustainable way has been seen as a great thing to do at last
No one paid attention to some important facts in…
