Limited in their options and in disagreement about how far to go to pass federal legislation, Democrats are approaching voting rights as an issue to be won in future elections.
‘Sulli Deals’: Muslim Women in India Being Put Up for Sale | Inter Press Service (Me: Religious bigotry and anti-female attitudes ignored by Modi government!)
“The ‘Sulli Deal’ auction is the latest manifestation of the extreme misogyny and fear of who speaks out. It is revolting and Islamophobic, and an attempt to intimidate and insult the dignity of women,” Seshu says.
“Organised groups use the internet to incite hatred and abuse. The delay in spotting and taking down objectionable content is inexcusable. If this app was hosted on GitHub, it needs to state clearly what its hosting guidelines are. I feel that the tech companies are aware of the problematic content. They do allow its circulation while they pretend ignorance or helplessness. For them, the more the clicks and eyeballs, the more the possibility of monetisation.”
Following these attacks on Muslim women, a group of more than 800 women’s rights organisations and concerned individuals issued a statement condemning the harassment and abuse.
“This is a conspiracy to target women by creating a database of those Muslim women journalists, professionals and students who were actively raising a voice on social media against right-wing Hindutva majoritarianism. The intention is to silence their political participation.
“This attempt to de-humanise and sexualise Muslim women is a systemic act of intimidation and harm. This is not the first time this has happened,” the statement says.

B.C.’s prescribed safer supply program expands to reduce overdoses and deaths from illicit drugs | CBC News
People in B.C. who use toxic illicit drugs and are at risk of overdosing or dying will soon be able to access alternative drugs, the minister of mental health and addictions announced Thursday.
During a news conference, Sheila Malcolmson said the expanded safer supply program will help save lives by offering a substitute to poisoned street drugs to reduce overdose deaths.
She said the new policy will allow people who have been clinically assessed to have access to prescribed alternative drugs, like oral opioids, as a way to replace drugs that could be laced with potentially deadly fentanyl.
“At the start of the pandemic, B.C. provided access to some prescribed safer supply medications to save lives from overdose and protect people from COVID-19,” Malcolmson said.

COVID Vaccines and Breast-Feeding
[A friend raised this topic, and I thought it was time to revisit it and see the current state of research. Enjoy the good news!]
Skeptics have argued that because there were no samples of breast-feeding mothers in vaccine trials, it is unknown as to whether vaccines are safe when nursing.
Sigh.
These concerns are theoretical; the engineering in the vaccines is real.
The argument for safety of vaccines is based on the genetic engineering used to produce this generation of COVID products. Vaccines based on mRNA technology simply don’t have the risks associated with older products developed through culturing eggs. That’s also why mRNA vaccines are much faster in production. We’re not going through the cumbersome and time consuming process of impregnating chickens, waiting for eggs, collecting eggs and harvesting the vaccine from them. Instead, we’re using computer science to directly produce what we want. Everything you know about…

Covid: UK daily cases pass 50,000 for first time since January – BBC News (Me: “Wishing and hoping” people do the right thing has already been shown not to work!)
There were 51,870 cases recorded – the highest figure since 15 January – and 49 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.
From Monday, lockdown rules will end in England – although some guidance will remain.
Earlier, England’s chief medical officer warned hospital admissions could hit “scary numbers”.
Prof Chris Whitty said the number of people in hospital with Covid was doubling roughly every three weeks.
The UK is “not out of the woods yet” and people should act with caution as restrictions are eased on Monday, he added.
