Candidate Under Investigation in PA Road Fatality is Vice Chair of CPAC | Talking Points Memo

You see this story about the gubernatorial candidate from Pennsylvania who’s being investigated for his involvement in a fatal motorcycle accident. He apparently drove for miles after the accident with the motorcycle stuck to the front of his car. Charlie Gerow insists he wasn’t the “cause” of the accident. As I said, his role in the accident is currently being investigated by Pennsylvania State Police.

But TPM Reader BH points out that Gerow is not just a candidate for governor. He’s the Vice Chair of the American Conservative Union, the group that puts on CPAC.

Opinion | Enough already. It’s time for vaccine entry passes. – The Washington Post

The results were stunning. Sure some Frenchmen protested, but 3.7 million booked vaccine appointments in the first week after Macron’s announcement, and “a record of nearly 900,000 vaccinations in a single day on July 19.” Macron is saving lives and helping to restore his country’s economy and mental health.

Meanwhile, in the United States, we are still pleading with the unpersuadables to stop listening to anti-vaccination cranks and risking their own lives and others around them (e.g., children not old enough to get the vaccine, those vulnerable to breakthrough infections). Polling suggests outreach will not get us far. “Among American adults who have not yet received a vaccine, 35% say they probably will not, and 45% say they definitely will not, according to a poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Just 3% say they definitely will get the shots, though another 16% say they probably will.”

Op-Ed: Everyone should mask up, kids aren’t vaccinated – Los Angeles Times

It’s also true that nearly 500 children have died, 150,000 to 240,000 have likely been hospitalized, and more than 4,000 have developed multisystem inflammatory syndrome. At the same time, only one child has died of the flu. Based on these measures, COVID-19 is more than 400 times more deadly than the flu and is one of the leading causes of death or hospitalization in children. A clarification/correction on Jamaica’s vaccination numbers; and new COVID restrictions start tomorrow

Petchary's Blog

I have to confess I am not good at numbers. So I made an error in yesterday’s account of the Ministry of Health and Wellness briefing on COVID-19.

Let me set it straight. I noted yesterday: “Over 300,000 have received their first dose. This includes 122,000 who have received their second.”Incorrect! (I have removed that part now).

A kind follower pointed out to me that these numbers refer to the total number of vaccines administered, NOT the total number of people vaccinated.

The Ministry reported today that as of Sunday, July 25 their numbers are: 178,444 first doses have been administered, and 123,848 second doses of AstraZeneca. This adds up to a total of 302,856 doses administered. As you can see, there is still a bit of a gap between the first and second dose numbers, and those who are now due are urged to get their second dose…

Illinois Approves Over-the-Counter Birth Control

Last week, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a law that allows pharmacists to approve up to a year’s worth of hormonal birth control without a doctor’s prescription. The legislation, House Bill 0135, only requires that patients—people who walk into the drugstore—complete a self-screening assessment and undergo a brief consultation. The pharmacist would then provide patients with “counseling and education about all methods of contraception … and their proper use and effectiveness.” Et voilà! Twelve months of birth control. Shiawassee County Officials to Return COVID Relief Money Used for Bonuses

COVID-19 relief money was meant to aid workers, small business owners and people who had lost their jobs or lost wages during the pandemic. It was meant for people who are financially struggling due to something they had no control over. Of course, if you happen to be a Republican government official in Shiawassee County, Mich., you might have briefly been under the impression that financial relief efforts served a different purpose—to make it rain on your bank account balance.

The Associated Press reports that elected officials in the conservative Michigan county gifted themselves and other county officials $65,000 worth of COVID relief money for bonuses and are now giving it all back after public outcry—and after legal officials informed them that what they were doing was illegal AF.
