Filosofa's Word

Every song I’ve considered playing for the past hour, I have already played too recently for a redux. And anyway, I’ve been re-duxing entirely too much of late. I was chatting with a friend the other evening and the subject of Sam Cooke came up, so I went in search of a Sam Cooke favourite that I haven’t already worn out here. And I found one! I literally did a happy dance … well, okay, it was more a sigh of relief, since it’s late and I am too exhausted to dance at the moment.

Sam Cooke wrote this song, but gave the writing credit to his younger brother L.C. because he did not want his own publisher to profit from the song.

According to Songfacts …

“Cooke was signed to Specialty Records, which was a gospel label. Cooke’s producer, Bumps Blackwell, brought this to Art Rupe, who owned the…

Ending Amazon deforestation a top priority on Colombian minister’s D.C. visit

Colombia is courting other governments and conservation organizations for support in tackling Amazonian deforestation bringing about what it describes as one of the most ambitious emissions reduction goals in the world.

Carlos Eduardo Correa, the country’s minister of environment and sustainable development, visited Washington, D.C., from July 14 to 16, where he met with members of Congress, representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and nonprofit organizations such as WWF, Conservation International and the Amazon Conservation Team, among others. Correa discussed with them the priorities of the Colombian environment and sustainability sector.

Correa made the United States his first international destination in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the solid political bonds and common environmental interests between the two countries.

According to Correa, with its return to the Paris Agreement, the U.S. government has a crucial climate plan aligned with Colombia’s priorities.

Why You Should Not Use Ivermectin to Treat or Prevent COVID-19 | FDA

When Can Taking Ivermectin Be Unsafe?

The FDA has not reviewed data to support use of ivermectin in COVID-19 patients to treat or to prevent COVID-19; however, some initial research is underway. Taking a drug for an unapproved use can be very dangerous. This is true of ivermectin, too.

There’s a lot of misinformation around, and you may have heard that it’s okay to take large doses of ivermectin. That is wrong.

Even the levels of ivermectin for approved uses can interact with other medications, like blood-thinners. You can also overdose on ivermectin, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance), seizures, coma and even death.

Endless War

In Saner Thought

UpThe US has been in almost constant war since 1941….that is in case you are bad at math 80 years….

The American people have little to say these day about the endless war and endless interventionism….they are willfully ignorant…….

In other words, despite the occasional setbacks and disappointments of the recent past, this country’s global preeminence remained indisputable, not just in theory but in fact. That the United States would enjoy such a status for the foreseeable future seemed a foregone conclusion. After all, if any single nation prefigured the destiny of humankind, it was ours. Among the lessons taught by history itself, nothing ranked higher or seemed more obvious. Primacy, in other words, defined our calling.

Any number of motives, most of them utterly wrong-headed, had prompted the United States to go to war in Vietnam. Yet, in retrospect, I’ve come to believe that one motive took precedence over…

Sharing solutions: How a digital toolkit is strengthening Indigenous voices

The Earth Defenders Toolkit is working to help overcome these barriers. It’s a living collection of tools and resources for Indigenous communities on the front lines of defending their land. The toolkit is also a space where environmental and human rights defenders and allies can connect, share stories and mobilize together. It supports local autonomy and data sovereignty while minimizing dependency on outside support.

“We’re hoping to create more spaces for community so earth defenders can sort of share stories and successes and pain points and obstacles,” said Rudo Kemper, a program manager at Digital Democracy.

Digital Democracy, along with local partners, created the Earth Defenders Toolkit after seeing that two effective apps, Mapeo and Terrastories, closely aligned in the fight for Indigenous rights. The toolkit formally launched in June 2021.

So far, the toolkit includes helpful guides for communities looking to get started on a project, collaborative forums for allies to connect and share knowledge, and case studies from earth defenders using technology successfully. And if a land defender doesn’t know where to start, there’s an interactive tool finder that helps users learn what is out there and what might be best suited for their goals.

Many communities use social media, like Facebook and TikTok, to share information. But earth defenders often need a platform where they can share information securely without putting sensitive information on the internet, especially when a government may monitor social media platforms.
