LAPD employee who lost partner, widow of sergeant urge vaccination in LAPD video – Los Angeles Times

Even after her life partner and fellow Los Angeles Police Department employee Raymond Guerrero died of COVID-19, Debra Guerrero wasn’t quite sure about getting the vaccine. She’d had the virus, too, and been pretty sick, but wanted to see further testing of the vaccine before getting the jab. But her daughters, who had just lost their father, changed her mind. “Every time I would cough or get a cold my children would worry that I was going to get sick and die,” said Guerrero, a police service representative for the past 20 years. “When your daughter looks you in the face and tells you, ‘You’re the only parent I have left,’ it’s very gut-wrenching.” Guerrero said that now — eight months after Raymond Guerrero’s death in January — she encourages everyone in the department to get vaccinated.

Sirhan Sirhan has not been paroled despite nearly every headline you have seen today!

He has been recommended for parole. That recommendation now goes to the parole commission which can accept or reject the recommendation. If they accept the recommendation, the Governor can then reject or accept it, as he wishes.

Today has been a day for click bait by the whole internet and the media on Sirhan Sirhan as well as the sad news out of Afghanistan and out of Florida and Texas on young people getting Covid in high number and the possibility of more needless deaths because of mismanagement by some governors and school boards.

After negotiating with the Taliban, Trump officials criticize Biden for negotiating with the Taliban – The Washington Post

“We had an incredible agreement, they weren’t killing our soldiers,” Trump said Thursday, contrasting the lack of attacks on U.S. troops after his Taliban deal with the “tremendous danger” that he said American troops were facing under a Biden-negotiated security agreement with the Taliban.

Trump failed to mention that his agreement required significant U.S. concessions in return for Taliban cooperation, even as the Taliban continued to attack and kill Afghan forces after the deal was signed. The agreement also hinged, in part, on a May 1 withdrawal deadline for all U.S. forces, which Biden later extended.

Texas reports most COVID-19 cases in schools in a single week yet | The Texas Tribune

Even as some Texas schools hadn’t yet started the school year, the number of positive COVID-19 student cases statewide reported last week surpassed the peak seen any time last year, state data released Friday shows. Between Aug. 16 and Aug. 22, there were 14,033 positive cases reported among students across the state, 34% more than the week with the most student cases reported last school year, the Department of State Health Services data shows. Last week’s totals also represent a 182% increase from the week ending Aug. 15, though fewer students were in school then. There have been 20,256 reported cases among students since the state agency started tracking data on Aug. 2 for this school year. That’s less than 0.4% of the 5.3 million students enrolled in the state as of January.

Dallas’ Hidden History of Terror – The Texas Observer

“Dallas commands a part of Texas that is much more Southern, with stronger roots in slave culture, than many outsiders realize,” Schutze writes. To make the case, he recounts the 19th-century influx of enslavers to North Texas, where he argues slavery then was likely even crueller than in the Deep South. He reviews post-Civil War federal reports recounting floggings and murders that permeated Dallas, and describes the city in the 1920s as a hotbed of KKK activity. As the Black middle class fitfully grew, he describes how the city used “legal hocus pocus” to vaporize property rights, clear neighborhoods, and push as many Black residents as possible into segregated housing projects. These very pressures, he details, led Black housebuyers to venture into South Dallas, where working-class whites responded with dynamite.  Black Dallasites fought back, defending their homes with guns as necessary, but—in Shutze’s telling—the public square stayed rather quiet. Bull Connor sicced his dogs in Birmingham and Watts burned in Los Angeles, but Dallas saw just a few picket lines outside downtown stores. The key player, he says, was the Citizens Council, a coterie of business elites that control
