LANDBACK Friends

I first heard of the Wet’suwet’en peoples and their struggle to prevent the construction of the Coastal GasLink (CGL) pipeline through their pristine land in January 2020. What caught my attention was the following video, “Coastal Gaslink Evicted from Unist’ot’en territory.” Having been engaged with protecting water from the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines for years, I was amazed at the peaceful eviction of CGL workers from Wet’suwet’en territories, temporary as it turned out to be.

Unfortunately, the interactions between the Wet’suwet’en and the Canadian government have not been peaceful. There have been many conflicts and arrests of Wet’suwet’en people by militarized Royal Canadian Mounted Police. There are heightened tensions now as construction of CGL has reached the point of drilling under the sacred headwaters of the Wedzin Kwa river.

Under ‘Anuc niwh’it’en (Wet’suwet’en law) all Hereditary Chiefs of the five clans of the Wet’suwet’en have unanimously opposed…

The origins of viruses: discovery takes time, international resources, and cooperation – The Lancet

Revealing the origins of SARS-CoV-2 is a prerequisite for cutting off the virus from the root and preventing future spillover of the virus. This work is of great significance in infection disease prevention and control in the face of Disease X.

Although scientists around the world are searching very hard, the origins of SARS-CoV-2 remain elusive. In fact, for many infectious pathogens, although their origins have been traced back decades, the debate around the origins remains alive.

HIV is a good first example. The first official report about AIDS was made on June 5, 1981, by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 5 years later, Nahmias and colleagues

discovered a human serum sample collected in Léopoldville (now Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo) in early 1959 that suggested exposure to HIV. Phylogenetic analysis subsequently suggested that an HIV ancestor had been introduced to Africa before 1959,

and a relatively recent report, from 2008, revealed that the HIV-1 M group originated in about 1908 (CI 1884–1924) and has been circulating in the population for about 100 years.

Obesity management as a primary treatment goal for type 2 diabetes: time to reframe the conversation – The Lancet

Weight loss is known to reverse the underlying metabolic abnormalities of type 2 diabetes and, as such, improve glucose control; loss of 15% or more of bodyweight can have a disease-modifying effect in people with type 2 diabetes, an outcome that is not attainable by any other glucose-lowering intervention. Furthermore, weight loss in this population exerts benefits that extend beyond glycaemic control to improve risk factors for cardiometabolic disease and quality of life. We review the evidence supporting the role of weight loss in the management of type 2 diabetes and propose that many patients with type 2 diabetes would benefit from having a primary weight-centric approach to diabetes treatment. We discuss the logistical challenges to implementing a new weight-centric primary treatment goal in people with type 2 diabetes. World Cup of chefs

During two days, 21 teams (three had to give up their arrival due to health constraints) faced each other on two tests. They offered to a jury of chefs from around the world a tray around the beef fin and, unpublished test, a box with three dishes – an entrance, a dish, a dessert – on a declination of cherry tomato. The level rises to each edition“, welcomed the president of the competition, Jérôme Bocuse, the son of the legendary “Monsieur Paul”, who died in 2018. “Even on a simple product like the cherry tomato, there are extraordinary things”, he added.
