Anacaona and the Day of Indigenous Resistance  — Unwrapping Development

Barbara Crane Navarro

Today, October 12, is the Day of Indigenous Resistance, at least in Venezuela and in the hearts of millions of people in other lands. In Costa Rica, it’s the Día de las Culturas. But in many places, it’s still called Columbus Day or the Día de la Raza. In Canada, the date is mostly ignored. Here,[…]

Wondering Wednesdays, Do More (was Baby Floors), Chapter 6 Introduction: How to get there from here

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This post begins the rough draft of  Chapter 6 for my non-fiction WiP, Baby Floors/Baby Acres, now working titled Do More.    This chapter and those that follow put a roadmap in place for getting to where every child born could have at least a little studio apartment (I’ve even stayed in converted tiny hotel rooms that had been advertised as apartments, and thus learned never to rent sight unseen, even if it seems legit and  you are desperate), as small as a hotel room with a hot plate, fridge, and microwave.

Putting a floor on poverty so that each and every baby born can have a safe childhood.

Since this is a short post (only 200 words or so), I’m putting all of the chapter 6 rough draft outlines below, since each chapter, past and future, ties back in to this chapter, via the high level…

Mothers sue after children catch Covid at Wisconsin schools with no mandates | Wisconsin | The Guardian

Two Wisconsin mothers whose children had Covid-19 in September have sued their school districts, for “needlessly and recklessly endangering the health and safety” of their children and other students.

Both lawsuits accuse the school districts of creating a “snake pit” for students by not implementing Covid-19 safety measures recommended by health officials, such as indoor masking, at their schools this year.

The suits say the Falls Creek school district and school board and Waukesha school district and school board “are aware that by removing their Covid-19 mitigation measures they are needlessly and recklessly endangering the health and safety of their students”.

Gina Kildahl filed on Monday in Wisconsin’s western district court after her child, a Falls Creek district elementary school student, tested positive for Covid-19 in late September.

The complaint said the school board voted against a mask requirement for the 2021-22 school year and that people are allowed to visit the district without masks or being screened or tested for Covid-19.

While Kildahl’s child wore a mask to school each day, according to the complaint, many other students did not. In late September, there was an outbreak in her child’s class and the child tested positive.
