Lech Lecha, or, when your get up and go has got up and went

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

     So, this week’s parashah is Parashat Lech Lecha, literally “Go to yourself” obviously translated as just Go.  The command to leave country of birth and land where family lives, going just in one mostly nuclear group, ok, with a nephew as well as wife, and a large retinue, feels like an uprooting.  

   But what about folks with no spouse, and no retinue:  how do those folks find family, and where is home, birth place or otherwise?  How does one decide where home is when one has no family of origin, either due to abusive childhoods, or other reasons, and no place that calls to one as home?  How does one even begin to find community, let alone family?

What would you do, and how would you decide where to go, Thoughtful Readers?

Happy International Rural Women’s Day!

This year, the focus is on women farmers. Frequently lauded for their strength, hard work and resilience, they are a solid presence in rural Jamaica – over one third of rural women are farmers. Three years ago, I met a group of them at a Farmer’s School graduation ceremony, and learned a lot from them about their challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed their company, and wrote about them here. I hope they are all doing well. At that event, over sixty percent of graduates from the Farmers’ School were women.
