WHO Regional Office for Africa / Press release | Over 80 million reached as Africa trailblazes novel polio vaccine

More than 80 million children have been vaccinated with the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) in six countries in Africa, the world’s first region to rollout of the vaccine just months after the World Health Organization (WHO) gave it Emergency Use Listing status in November 2020.

Nigeria became the first country in the world to use nOPV2 to tackle an outbreak in March 2021, vaccinating 7 million children in six states. By September, Benin, Congo, Liberia, Niger and Sierra Leone had also rolled out the vaccine. Africa was certified free of wild polio in August 2020, but outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived polio type 2 are still being reported.

Invisible Disabilities : How Docs, Patients & Public Can Help – Invisibly Me

TOUCH A LIFE BY SHARING YOUR STORY

Your story is valuable, and sharing it could just make the difference that someone else needs to get a diagnosis, to pursue a new line of treatment or to feel a little less alone in their journey. If you feel comfortable doing so, you might want to consider sharing what you can to with others, and the likes of Facebook groups, forums, magazine articles and blogs are great places to start. If you don’t want to, that’s absolutely fine. You might feel more comfortable with making individual connections with others, where you can be a friend to someone in a similar boat and provide each other with mutual support…. Critical thinking

LANDBACK Friends

I recently wrote about evidence and faith. Faith in the very narrow definition of “blind” faith, basing beliefs and actions on an ideology in contrast to evidence and critical thinking.

Ideology is fueling increasingly violent culture wars today. I often find myself wishing people were better informed and thinking critically. Not in the sense of agreeing with me, but having views based on facts and evidence, when available, and informed by critical thinking.

Critical thinking is a widely accepted educational goal. Its definition is contested, but the competing definitions can be understood as differing conceptions of the same basic concept: careful thinking directed to a goal. Conceptions differ with respect to the scope of such thinking, the type of goal, the criteria and norms for thinking carefully, and the thinking components on which they focus. Its adoption as an educational goal has been recommended on the basis of respect…
