American historian Amy Knight sizes up Russia’s ‘war weary’ elites — Meduza

…Knight acknowledges that predicting Russian elites’ behavior is difficult, but she told Meduza that the fighting in Ukraine is making everyone “very war weary.” She cited oligarch Oleg Deripaska’s willingness to criticize the invasion publicly as evidence that “he too is aware that there is a lot of discontent” (even if he’s not actually a government official). “[It] makes me wonder whether there aren’t some other reasons to speculate that Putin isn’t completely secure,” Knight said.

Western sanctions have “laid the groundwork for gradual and real dissatisfaction with Putin” even though “nothing has happened yet,” Knight told Meduza. She drew special attention to how the war has limited the prospects of future generations of elites, rendering children and grandchildren “captive[s] in this shell of Russia.” “It takes away any hope for the future for the younger generation — the younger generation of these government officials and law enforcement…”

Fall season thoughts – Bio-Blogger

It’s my quote on YQ

The trees don’t mourn their leaves,
they just release them with ease,
trusting the earth to cradle each one.
As the colors change and the air cools,
there’s a calmness in the letting go,
a beauty in knowing,
everything has it’s season.

It simply and sweetly describes the peaceful cycle of nature, showing how trees let go of their leaves without sorrow. It reflects the beauty in trusting that everything has its time, and letting go can be as calming as the changing seasons. Just like the trees, we too can find peace in releasing what no longer serves us, knowing that life moves forward in its own season.

Dana Milbank: “You Weren’t Supposed to Fact-Check Me!” | Diane Ravitch’s blog

Dana Milbank of the Washington Post reacted quickly last night to the Vice-Presidential debate:

Half an hour into Tuesday night’s vice-presidential debate, JD Vance lodged a whiny protest.

“Margaret,” he said to moderator Margaret Brennan of CBS News, “the rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact check!”

It was a lie on top of another lie, supplemented by a pair of other lies, in support of an even bigger lie.

There was no “rule” against fact-checking. And Vance had just told a whopper. He had alleged that, in Springfield, Ohio, “you’ve got schools that are overwhelmed, you’ve got hospitals that are overwhelmed, you have got housing that is totally unaffordable because we brought in millions of illegal immigrants.”

There is no “open border,” Kamala Harris isn’t the president, and the thousands of Haitian migrants to which Vance was referring have legal status, which Brennan had accurately pointed out. But Vance claimed that “what’s actually going on” was that the Haitian migrants are there as part of “the facilitation of illegal immigration” — and he kept going until the moderators shut off the candidates’ microphones…

My Take on the Oct 1st Vice Presidential Debate Between Gov. Tim Walz and Senator JD Vance – Gronda Morin

“A 65% majority of debate watchers now say Walz is qualified to serve as president if necessary, with 58% saying the same of Vance. Prior to the debate, 62% of the same voters thought Walz was qualified to assume the presidency if needed and 50% that Vance was qualified to do so.”
