For several hours on December 10, millions of people in Myanmar remained inside their homes as part of a ‘silent strike’ against the military regime. Major cities, including the capital Naypyitaw, looked like ‘ghost towns’ as businesses closed down while workers chose to stay at home. International Monkey Day!
Monkey Day is an unofficial international holiday celebrated on December 14.[1] The holiday was created and popularized in 2000 by artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin when they were art students at Michigan State University.[2] Monkey Day celebrates monkeys and “all things simian“, including other non-human primates such as apes, tarsiers, and lemurs.[3] Monkey Day is celebrated worldwide and often also known as World Monkey Day and International Monkey Day.

Our present circumstances are based on our past decisions and our future is based on the decisions we now make. The past is gone, it is in the present where we change our chain of circumstances for the future.

Study: Requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination for some activities boosts shot uptake – UPI.com
Regions that require proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter indoor restaurants, theaters and events see a boost in inoculation rates after instituting the policies, a study published Monday by the Lancet Public Health found.
Countries starting at lower-than-average vaccine coverage in the study, such as France, Israel, Italy and Switzerland, experienced a large increase in uptake of the shots after requiring so-called “vaccine passports” for certain activities, the data showed.

In Colombia, threatened women of the Wayuú community continue to fight rampant mining
- The Wayuú Women’s Force, founded in 2006, is an Indigenous organization that denounces the coal mining that has dammed and contaminated rivers, leaving much of La Guajira without water.
- Members of the organization have received death threats but continue to train women to stand up for their human rights.
- In addition to their work in La Guajira, the Wayuú women are developing ways of holding companies all over the world accountable for their negative environmental impact.

NHS trusts criticised over system that films mental health patients in their bedrooms | NHS | The Guardian (Me: danger of hacking and compromising patients?)
It includes a live video feed of the patient, which is recorded and kept for 24-72 hours, depending on the NHS trust, before being deleted. Oxehealth, which created the system, said it was not like CCTV because staff could only view the video feed for about 10-15 seconds during a vital signs check or in response to a safety incident.
The system, which is also installed at Exeter police station custody suite and an Oxfordshire care home, can alert staff if someone else has unexpectedly entered a patient’s room or if they are in a blindspot, such as the bathroom, for too long.
Alexa Knight, associate director of policy and practice at Rethink Mental Illness, said: “While we appreciate that the motivation for putting surveillance cameras in people’s bedrooms stems from the need to protect them, to do so without clear consent is unjustifiable and this pilot should be suspended immediately.”

International Human Crime
The hundreds of square miles of forests in Canada ripped up for the extraction of tar sands is unbearable to see. Those images have been kept out of the mainstream media. As disturbing are the huge tailings ponds that hold the huge volumes of waste water contaminated during the extraction.
How to deal with that water is a problem that has been continually postponed. But now there are discussions about draining those lakes. Of course, the fossil fuel companies are saying they can clean the water, not to the level of drinking water, but “safe” enough for discharge into the Athabasca River.
Indigenous communities near these tailings ponds have long seen dramatically increased levels of cancer.

Some Indigenous communities in northern Alberta say they’re being handed a choice between terrible options as the federal government develops regulations to allow treated tailings from tar sands/oil sands operations to be released…
