War, What is it Good For? 💣 | From Behind the Pen

We talk about the deadly mess that war leaves and the lives destroyed as a result of it. It breaks my heart and pains me to look at the images in the aftermath of the destruction war causes as I am sure that it does to you too. Today, I’m asking you to ruminate on and digest the simple unanswered question, “Why?” We shake our heads in disgust, horrified as we shed tears or cover our mouths at the sight of unimaginable devastation.

War: Why?

Looking at the carnage and rubble
seeing mass destruction shakes my spirit to the core
I wrestle with the heartbreak of lives lost
stolen by incomprehensible battles.
Why?
Because of power, narcissism, and overall greed?
How much greed do you really need?
Is it ever enough?
What long-term satisfaction do you get
from killing and destroying dreams that have been deferred,
aspirations that have been murdered
and achievements that have been silenced?
Why?

In the words of musician Edwin Starr’s 1970 hit “War,” he asks, “What is it good for, absolutely nothing.” Yes, we have our military who step up to the plate to honor, secure, serve, protect, and defend our respective countries and nations. But the question is, do you ever recover from the stains and memories of what war causes, what it takes away, and what it leaves? Is there any conscience for protecting the sacredness of life, peace, hope, and humanity? Where does love fit in?

It’s hard to look at these images in the news, but I could never imagine the hell and sorrow living through it. I can’t imagine holding your child’s mangled body, or cradling the lifeless bodies of loved ones and friends, and for what? If the land is seized the destruction is too great for anyone or anything to inhabit it, then what was this fighting all about? Bragging rights? Do leaders scoff at death and play Russian roulette with lives because it excites them? Or do they keep playing cruel, diabolical jokes about comparing whose balls are the biggest, the baddest, and most deadliest? Seems like they have no balls at all. It’s just a wasteland of death and apocalyptic images that remind you that there’s nothing good coming from this.

War: The carnage. Is it a method for peace, or a reminder of who man’s worst enemy is…himself!
