ASIA/INDIA – Vandalism in a Catholic church in southern India – Agenzia Fides

In recent weeks, in various districts of Karnataka state in southern India, there have been episodes of intercommunal tension and violence against Christians. At the root of the tensions is the new bill that aims to limit religious conversions, presented in the state parliament assembly in recent days. According to the national government, in the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Hindu Nationalist Party (BJP), the bill entitled “Protection of the right to freedom of religion” aims to prevent “forced conversions”. According to observers, it actually targets religious minorities (Christians and Muslims) and even provides harsher penalties than similar laws in force in other Indian states. There were public protests against the bill throughout Karnataka, with the participation of Mgr. Peter Machado, Catholic Archbishop of Bangalore (see Fides 14/12/2021).
In Karnataka, 84% of the 61 million people are Hindus, while Muslims represent 13% and Christians 2% of the total population. Source: ASIA/INDIA – Vandalism in a Catholic church in southern India – Agenzia Fides

Avian Flu Diary: More Reports Suggest Omicron May Be Less Severe Than Delta

How much less severe is still up for debate, and if sufficient numbers of people are infected – even by a much milder virus than Delta – that could still produce a large number of hospitalizations and deaths.  But any attenuation of its severity is welcome news.  Source: Avian Flu Diary: More Reports Suggest Omicron May Be Less Severe Than Delta

Watch the Building of the Empire State Building in Color: The Creation of the Iconic 1930s Skyscraper From Start to Finish | Open Culture

Ambition is not unknown in the New York City of the 2020s, but the New York City of the 1920s seems to have consisted of nothing but. Back then, where else would anyone dare to propose the tallest building in the world — much less end up with the job twelve days ahead of schedule and $9 million under budget? The construction of the Empire State Building began in January of 1930, just three months after the Wall Street Crash that began the Great Depression. Though economic conditions kept the project from attaining profitability until the 1950s (and stuck it with the nickname “Empty State Building”), it nevertheless stood in symbolic defiance of those hard times — and, ultimately, came to stand for New York and indeed the United Sates of America itself.

You can see footage of the Empire State Building’s construction in the compilation above, which gathers clips from contemporary newsreels and other sources and presents them in “restored, enhanced and colorized” form.

Iowa Solidarity with Wet’suwet’en

LANDBACK Friends

As I’ve been writing (see table below), the Wet’suwet’en peoples have declared the week of December 20 as a time for international support for their struggle to stop the completion of the Coastal GasLink pipeline through their pristine lands and water.

The map shows only two actions were planned in the Midwest. One is the action we took at the Chase bank in Des Moines yesterday, and the second will be held today in Chicago. Ironically, a mutual friend introduced me to Daniel, another Quaker working in support of the Wet’suwet’en and for LandBack. Daniel will be participating in the Midwest solidarity event in Chicago today.

Another new connection was made when my friend Jon Krieg (American Friends Service Committee) introduced me to Julie Brown, Turtle Island Solidarity Network, who has connections with the Wet’suwet’en organizers as well as activists in Iowa. Julie had connections with most of those who…
