A New Ban on Surprise Medical Bills Starts This Week – The New York Times
If you are having a medical emergency and go to an urgent care center or emergency room, you can’t be charged more than the cost sharing you are accustomed to for in-network services. This is where the law’s protections are the simplest and the most clear for people with health insurance.
You will still be responsible for things like a deductible or a co-payment. But once patients make that normal payment, they should expect no more bills.
“We shouldn’t have to depend on people knowing minutia about insurance regulation in order for them to get care or not be unfairly billed,” said Anthony Wright, the executive director of Health Access California, a patient group that supported the federal law and that fought for a law that banned surprise bills in California starting in 2017.

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
How do neighbors in your town come together?
I started my own walking singing tour company in the belief that song was a powerful way to help bring people together to learn from our history. Some of what I learned is in my book Stayed on Freedom’s Call (last week was page 43…):
” … doctrine of Separate But Equal. That famous ruling, and indeed the preceding rulings in 1948, set the stage for the protests of the 1960’s necessary to secure enforcement of the rights gained in the court room.
Let us go, now, to Upper Northwest, into the “tree streets” of Shepherd Park where a group of neighbors inspired cooperation across the nation.

Rimsko pozorište i Trijumfalna kapija u Oranžu, Francuska – Roman Theater and Arc de Triomphe in Orange, France

A Clash of Armor
Desert Storm saw three firefights involving more than 3,000 armored fighting vehicles in a span of just 100 hours. That massive, intense, compressed event surpasses anything from World War II and there has never been anything remotely comparable since. (Yes, there were more tanks at Kursk, but the combat was spread over months. There was no single battle in the Kursk campaign that comes close.)
A couple of films have tried to convey the feel of what happened — the rapid decisions, heroism and mistakes. My favorite is probably “Courage Under Fire, ” the Meg Ryan and Denzel Washington flick from 1996. However, it’s difficult to convey the emotional intensity of night action in which it is impossible to identify friend and enemy and firing comes from all directions. The US and Japanese navies fought one such action off Guadalcanal in 1942. And then there’s this tank battle. It’s a…

Walnut Brown Sugar Butter
Eating My Way Through the Holidays. Festive Food Gifts: Walnut Brown Sugar Butter! Ahh, sweet butter. I don’t know if it’s the winter weather or the upcoming holidays that get me in the mood for bakery ideas. Who doesn’t appreciate aromatic cinnamon, sweet nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice? The smell of bread baking in the oven triggers all kinds of emotions. It can lift our mood and impact our behavior. Honestly, it would have been pretty easy to feature today’s compound butter all by itself. But tell me, isn’t it better to imagine slathering it all over those freshly-baked cinnamon rolls?

1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/3 cup walnuts, chopped
