Mutual Aid stories

LANDBACK Friends

For the past week I’ve been thinking and praying a lot about Mutual Aid in preparation for a discussion we plan to have at my Quaker meeting tomorrow.

As I have nearly every Saturday for the last year, I was with my Mutual Aid friends this morning for our weekly food distribution. Here are a few stories triggered from what happened this morning.

I had a clear spiritual leading to become involved in Des Moines Mutual Aid. For the sake of brevity, I’ll begin with my return to Iowa in 2017. I was looking for justice activists and soon had the opportunity to walk on the First Nation-Farmer Climate Unity March. A group of about ten native and ten non-native people walked and camped together for ninety-four miles, over eight days, along the path of the Dakota Access pipeline. The intention was for us to get to know each other…

New high-tech wearable patch monitors vital signs, never needs charging – Study Finds

“Our e-health patches may be employed as part of screening for lifestyle-related diseases such as heart disorders, signs of stress, and sleep apnea,” explains first author Dr. Andreas Petritz, in a statement.

The researchers used what’s known as a ferroelectric substance, which can power itself from normal movement — the piezoelectric effect. This is because the substance contains crystals that can be made to spontaneously have both a positive and negative charge. The researchers applied a strong electric current to a small amount of the material, just one micron thick. The material was very efficient at converting natural motion into small electric voltages, the researchers found.

These currents could either be transformed into signals for medical sensors or used to harvest energy. Multilayer patches could harvest up to 200 millijoules per day from a person’s natural movement if placed on a joint, like knees and elbows, the researchers say. This is enough power to monitor a patient’s cardiovascular parameters several times a day.

Also, because the patches are so thin, they are barely visible, making daily health monitors less invasive and unpleasant. “We expect that our findings will assist in the development of other sheet-type sensor systems that can perform precise bio-monitoring when affixed to the skin surface,” says study senior author Professor Tsuyoshi Sekitani.

The technology could even be monitored via smartphone or computer, the authors say.

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

The skill of translating ideas into other terms, or of translating mathematical terms into social ideas, is a crucial part of Adult citizenship responsibility,  and is thus part of any democracy movement.

Understanding sets of power relationships is also a crucial part of being an Adult in a democratic society.  Mathematics helps with that, as does reading novels, from your local public librarians list of recommendations!

Alphabet soup for the soul vol.2 – “N”

Words from Walden

N is for Neuroplasticity

“Neuroplasticity research showed that the brain changes its very structure with each different activity it performs, perfecting its circuits so it is better suited to the task at hand.” -Naveen Jain-

Simply put, Neuroplasticity is the way our brain changes.

The easiest way to explain this is an example of someone who never ran before and decide’s that they are going to run a marathon in 6 months.

Their brain is already molded a certain way from everything they have seen and experienced in their life up until the moment they decide to run a marathon.

On day one they may tie up a new pair of shoes and run for 5 or 10 minutes. A week later they could be up to 30 minutes and by the end of the first month, they can run for 45 minutes.

This daily process will slowly change their…
