Why We Need to Discuss How We Teach Kids About Racism in United States History

Blind Injustice

In the second part of my two-part blog post on Critical Race Theory (CRT), I said that it seems like the theory has gotten mixed in there with larger, yet important, discussions on how classrooms should navigate through topics of race and racism. I even conveyed in my post that such discussions are needed. This is an opinion I feel strongly about as someone who was a history major in college and is still a self-professed American history nerd.

However, what I didn’t go into in said post was why those discussions are needed.

So, why are these discussions necessary? Why can’t we just go on with history lesson plans that teach about America’s greatness, without even so much as questioning it?

Simply put, not teaching about the parts of America’s past and present that involve racism is not a complete teaching of American history.

How can you have…

Omicron surge sweeps through US hospital staff | CIDRAP

Currently, about 24% of US hospitals report critical staffing shortages, the highest of the pandemic, and many facilities are starting to limit elective surgeries and consider crisis standards of care.

Colorado’s health department on Jan 7 reactivated its crisis standards of care for emergency medical services, due to many emergency medical service (EMS) staff out sick and a high demand for patient transports.

State officials last activated the EMS crisis standards of care in April 2020 when Colorado was among the first states affected in the nation’s first COVID-19 surge. In November, it reactivated crisis standards of care for staffing healthcare systems, allowing hospitals more flexibility in boosting staff to meeting increasing community medical needs.

Sinead O’Connor apologises for ‘lashing out’ after the death of her son Shane

On Monday night, however, the acclaimed singer tweeted: “Ok, I’m gonna do the right thing here and apologise for my lashing out. Tusla are working with very limited resources. They loved Shane. They are broken-hearted. They are human. I am sorry I have upset them. We are a third-world country. It’s not their fault.

“The issue is… we are a third-world country. We have 12 beds in special care for suicidal teenagers. And no resources to save those who can’t manage life. 128 ICU beds in the whole country. Tusla did their best. We all did: and I am deeply sorry to have blamed anyone.”

(Me: Who is going to read this? People, if they even hear about this, will take the easiest out – wait 5 days and just act old normal… this will not help… I know they mean well but this does not build confidence and is not easy to follow for way too many folks.)

A matter of faith

LANDBACK Friends

There are two definitions of faith.

  • complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
  • strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

I wasn’t familiar with the use of apprehension above. I found one definition is “understanding or grasp”.

I spent a lot of time praying (faith) and thinking about the discussion we were going have at my Quaker meeting, Bear Creek (some of us via ZOOM) related to Mutual Aid. I’ve been deeply involved in Des Moines Mutual Aid (DMMA) for two years, writing nearly daily to share what I’ve been learning. It can be difficult to express lived experiences to those who haven’t had those experiences. Many Friends have had experiences that could be called Mutual Aid in their work peace and justice.

I made mistakes over the years because I had conflicts with the meeting related to…
