White “Allyship”

Lolsys Library

A rising tide lifts these homes

Darcy Hitchcock

Amsterdam is flat as a pancake and roughly at sea level. So as climate change raises sea level, people in The Netherlands have chosen to work with nature, not against it.

Marjan de Blok became an unlikely leader, with no engineering or architectural background. She just knew she needed a change from her hectic life. She spearheaded a community named Schoonschip, a floating neighborhood built around an abandoned industrial area.

Schoonschip, home to about 150 residents that includes some 40 kids, is made up of 46 households located on 30 arks. Half are floating semidetached homes, shared by two families. One has three generations of the same family.

De Blok wanted to green their lifestyle as well as the buildings.
