Trump and Vance’s ridiculous crusade against fact-checking debates – Los Angeles Times
As it happens, most Americans think debate moderators should fact-check. According to a June survey by Boston University’s College of Communication (my graduate school alma mater), more than two of every three Americans surveyed said “moderators should point out factual inaccuracies” in candidates’ statements during debates.
The survey did find a partisan discrepancy: While 81% of Democrats supported fact-checking in real time, 67% of Republicans did.
Gee, why do you suppose that is?

Washington Post Fact-Checks Trump on Hurricane Claims | Diane Ravitch’s blog
Trump’s claims have been echoed by his supporters, such as billionaire Elon Musk. But Trump is completely wrong.
Even though Trump was once president, he still appears to have little clue about the appropriations process. What’s even richer is that when he was president, he did exactly what he claims Biden did — take money from FEMA’s disaster fund to fund migrant programs at the southern border.
The Facts
FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. On Wednesday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters: “We are meeting the immediate needs with the money that we have. We are expecting another hurricane hitting. FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season.”
He emphasized there was plenty of money to deal with the current disaster. “We are meeting the moment,” he said, adding: “We have the immediate needs right now. On a continuing resolution, we have funds, but that is not a stable source of supply, if you will.”
Congress, as part of a short-term spending bill, recently provided $20 billion to the FEMA disaster relief fund. But Mayorkas noted: “That doesn’t speak about the future and the fact, as I mentioned earlier, that these extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity, and we have to be funded for the sake of the American people. This is not a political issue.”
In other words, Trump falsely claimed that there is no money left for Hurricane Helene survivors. That’s the opposite of what Mayorkas said.
“FEMA has what it needs for immediate response and recovery efforts,” FEMA spokeswoman Jaclyn Rothenberg said on X. “As [FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell] said, she has the full authority to spend against the President’s budget, but we’re not out of hurricane season yet so we need to keep a close eye on it. We may need to go back into immediate needs funding and we will be watching it closely.”
So how does Trump link this to migrants? A Trump campaign spokesman pointed to FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program, which gives grants to local governments and nonprofits to take care of undocumented immigrants. Congress boosted the budget from $360 million in fiscal year 2023 to $650 million in fiscal year 2024. The program’s 2023 annual report says it provides shelter, such as hotel/motel services, food and transportation, including plane tickets up to $700 a person.
As we said, Congress appropriated this money, just as it did the disaster fund. There’s no evidence that any money from the disaster fund was used to help migrants.
“These claims are completely false,” DHS said in a statement Thursday night. “As Secretary Mayorkas said, FEMA has the necessary resources to meet the immediate needs associated with Hurricane Helene and other disasters. The Shelter and Services Program (SSP) is a completely separate, appropriated grant program that was authorized and funded by Congress and is not associated in any way with FEMA’s disaster-related authorities or funding streams.”
Trump has a habit of assuming other politicians act in the same way as he would. So we wondered why he would accuse Biden of raiding the FEMA disaster fund to handle undocumented migrants.
It turns out that’s because he did this. In 2019, the Trump administration, in the middle of hurricane season, told Congress that it was taking $271 million from DHS programs, including $155 million from the disaster fund, to pay for immigration detention space and temporary hearing locations for asylum seekers who had been forced to wait in Mexico. “The U.S. is facing a security and humanitarian crisis on the Southern border,” the administration said in its notice that it was redirecting the funds.
The monthly reports issued by the FEMA disaster fund show $38 million was plucked and given to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in August that year — just before the prime storm period of September and October.
The Trump campaign did not respond to questions about Trump’s actions in 2019.
The Pinocchio Test
Trump falsely claims FEMA has run out of disaster money — and then falsely says that’s because money instead was spent on migrants. There is no evidence the Biden administration spent FEMA disaster money on migrants. Rather, that’s what Trump did.

Beating slow or fast, it gives the sign…
But if it one day reveals who it beats for,

♫ The Hollies Week Grand Finale ♫ | Filosofa’s Word
I’m Alive
This one has a really interesting and conflicting history! It was written by American songwriter Clint Ballard Jr. Ballard originally wrote the song … according to SongFacts, he wrote it for Gene Pitney, who rejected it as did Wayne Fontana, before it was passed on to Manchester band The Toggery Five and then ‘stolen’ and recorded by The Hollies. But according to Wikipedia, Ballard wrote the song for The Hollies, who initially passed it over to The Toggery Five but then changed their minds and decided to record it themselves.
Frank Renshaw, the lead guitarist of The Toggery Five, recollects: “Wayne Fontana gave us this song ‘I’m Alive’ as he said it wasn’t his style. We liked it a lot, booked time at Abbey Road Studios, and recorded it with Ron Richards as producer. Then the Hollies heard it and stole it from us! It turned out to be their first #1 hit in the UK.” If I had time, I’d try to dig deeper and find out the whole truth, but I have six songs to prepare tonight and it’s already after midnight!
This charted at #1 in the UK and Ireland and at #103 in the U.S.
Look Through Any Window
This was written by Graham Gouldman and Charles Silverman. As with the previously played Bus Stop, Graham Gouldman, who was still a teenager, got help with the lyrics from his father, Hymie, a writer known affectionately as “Hyme the Rhyme.” The song is about the ordinary delights that happen every day. Just look through any window and you’ll see them. According to Gouldman …
“I was on a train coming back from London up from Manchester where I used to live, with a friend of mine, and he was looking out the window. He said, ‘Look through any window,’ because we were looking as the train crept out of the station and started going through the suburbs quite slowly. We were trying to look into the houses to see what was going on.”
This charted at #4 in the UK and #32 in the U.S.
Jennifer Eccles
The name of this song was constructed from the first name of lead singer Allan Clarke’s wife (Jennifer Bowstead) and the maiden name of guitarist Graham Nash’s wife (Rose Eccles).
This is one of the last Hollies hits with Graham Nash, who left before they recorded their next album, a set of Bob Dylan covers called Hollies Sing Dylan. He picked up with David Crosby and Stephen Stills to form Crosby, Stills & Nash.
“Me, Graham and our wives were at his flat in Hampstead,” Allan Clarke recalled to Mojo magazine. “We said, ‘Let’s write a silly song, and we wrote Jennifer Eccles. Graham said, ‘I don’t want to do these sorts of songs anymore.’”
This charted at #7 in the UK, #19 in Canada, and #40 in the U.S.
Stay
This song was written by Maurice Williams in 1953 when he was 15 years old and first recorded in 1960 by Williams with his group the Zodiacs. In November 1963, the song was released by The Hollies, whose version reached #8 on the UK Singles Chart. It remained on the chart for a total of 16 weeks. The song is from their debut album Stay with The Hollies. Quite honestly, I listened to both the Zodiacs and The Hollies tonight and much prefer the Zodiacs’ version, but since it is The Hollies Week …
Just One Look
This one was song co-written by American R&B singers Doris Troy and Gregory Carroll. The recording by Doris Troy was a hit in 1963. The Hollies recorded it in 1964 at which time it reached #2 in the UK and became the 37th biggest hit of the year there. It wasn’t until it was re-released in 1967 that it charted in Canada at #30 and in the U.S. at #44. It has also been covered by Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt and Iain Matthews, each of whom achieved great success with the song. It may not have charted that well here in the U.S., but I really like it!
Well, my friends, that’s a wrap for The Hollies Week! I’ve really enjoyed this one … so many fun songs … and I hope you have, too! Now I need to put my thinking cap back on — if I can find it — and think of what my next series should be! Pete has suggested maybe the Grass Roots … hmmmmm …
