Lockdowns had a role: they saved lives – Virology Down Under
The role of lockdowns was to save lives that would have been lost if not enacted quickly. Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and others observed time and time again that lives were lost due to slow responses. Lockdowns could have been done better but when used surgically – quickly on, quickly off with financial support, communication and enhanced mental and other health support – they reduced lockdown-related harms while also preventing the death they were intended for.

Homem livre, tu sempre gostarás do mar.
Charles Baudelaire

2021 tropical forest loss figures put zero-deforestation goal by 2030 out of reach
- The world lost a Cuba-sized area of tropical forest in 2021, putting it far off track from meeting the no-deforestation goal by 2030 that governments and companies committed to at last year’s COP26 climate summit.
- Deforestation rates remained persistently high in Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo, home to the world’s two biggest expanses of tropical forest, negating the decline in deforestation seen in places like Indonesia and Gabon.
- The diverging trends in the different countries show that “it’s the domestic politics of forests that often really make a key difference,” says leading forest governance expert Frances Seymour.
- The boreal forests of Eurasia and North America also experienced a spike in deforestation last year, driven mainly by massive fires in Russia, which could set off a feedback loop of more heating and more burning.

Biden administration suspends Georgia plan to block access to ACA website
Federal regulators said Kemp’s planned changes in the marketplace could breach federal rules around insurance waivers and cause too many people to be dropped from coverage.
The letter from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, gives Georgia until July 28, 2022, to formulate a “corrective action plan … ensuring that the waiver will provide coverage to a comparable number of residents, that the coverage will be at least as comprehensive and affordable as coverage provided without the waiver, and that the waiver will not increase the federal deficit.”

Sea levels rising twice as fast as thought in New Zealand | Otago Daily Times Online News
The major new projections show infrastructure and homes in Auckland and Wellington – as well as many other places – risk inundation decades earlier than expected.
For example, in just 18 years parts of the capital will see 30cm of sea level rise, causing once-in-a-century flood damage every year.
Previously, councils and other authorities had not expected to reach this threshold until 2060 – halving the time to plan for mitigation or retreat.
