‘Elephants have no place in zoos’: Report on ‘horrifying’ suffering demands end to captivity | Euronews
Elephants are totally ill-suited to being kept in zoos where they suffer long-term psychological damage, according to wildlife experts quoted in a wide-ranging study into the animals’ plight in captivity across Europe and North America.
The report, “Elephants in Zoos: A Legacy of Shame” published on Wednesday by the Born Free Foundation, gives details of numerous cases where the herd animals have died young or suffered in captivity.
It says in 2021 there were 580 elephants in European zoos — around half the global total — and calls for the practice of keeping them in such places to be phased out.
The wildlife conservation charity also demands an end to the capture of wild elephants for export to zoos, and for breeding attempts from those held in captivity to cease.

Barack and Michelle Obama Weigh In On SCOTUS Abortion Decision
The Obamas posted a three-page statement to Instagram on Tuesday deriding the draft opinion, which could also provide a legal pretext for curtailing rights far beyond abortion.
“If the Supreme Court ultimately decides to overturn the landmark case of Roe v. Wade, then it will not only reverse nearly 50 years of precedent — it will relegate the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues,” the statement reads. The draft decision “simply forces folks to give up any constitutionally recognized interest in what happens to their body once they get pregnant,” without attempting to balance or consider any other interest in women’s health, safety or personal liberty,” it continued.

Good People Doing Good Things – Little Kids With BIG Hearts
There are two of my ‘weekly features’ that I try, no matter what is happening, never to miss: Jolly Monday, and Wednesday’s ‘Good People’ posts. This week, I am somewhat in a grey haze and already missed Jolly Monday (although it might just turn up a bit later in the week 😉 ) and was ready to throw in the towel on today’s Good People post. But then … I remembered this post from early in 2017 and as I re-read it, I thought perhaps this is just what we ALL need right now to bring us back out of that grey, hazy place! I think these kids will bring a smile to your face — they brought one to mine!
I have been working on this post for some four hours, and thus far, this sentence is all I have. I made several false starts … people who seemed…
