Human rights advocates respond to imposition of a State of Emergency in St. Catherine

Petchary's Blog

What our local media like to call “the crime monster” continues to haunt us all, stalking us – ever in our footsteps. Rather like the monster in the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” its presence is always palpable in some way or another. But unlike the sci-fi monster, crime doesn’t live in the “Upside Down.” It is very much in our right-way-up world. It is a daily reality for many Jamaicans.

After the broad-daylight mayhem in Spanish Town last week, Prime Minister Andrew Holness in an early morning press briefing declared a State of Emergency in St. Catherine, the large and densely populated parish of which Spanish Town is the Capital. The following day, a landmark ruling in the Supreme Court found that regulations governing the 2018 State of Public Emergency breached the constitutional rights of a claimant, who was held for several months without charge.

There has been much discussion…

BirdsCaribbean, American Ornithological Society fly over to Puerto Rico for their 2022 Conference

Petchary's Blog

The Caribbean (and American) birds are flying again… This time to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where BirdsCaribbean will be partnering with the American Ornithological Society for their 2022 Conference. So this time, it will be really big!

Caribbean birds are under threat as never before, with climate change impacts ever-present and growing. This is not helped by the ongoing post-COVID frenzy of building (hotels, highways, you name it) which is drastically reducing birds’ habitats and also the way stations for migrating birds, especially along the islands’ coastlines.

So, recovery and building back is critical! Stay tuned for more…

Sorte

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Quebec lifts mask mandate on public transit, but not everyone is on board | CBC News

Masks are still mandatory in hospitals, long-term care homes and other health-care facilities, where it’s more likely that vulnerable people could potentially be exposed to COVID-19. Mental health establishments aren’t included.

But Aaron Ansuini says vulnerable people like him are everywhere, and dropping one of the last remaining health measures is like telling them that they don’t matter.

“This idea of survival of the fittest is pretty disturbing because it implies that, if you can’t survive, you don’t deserve to be alive, and that’s kind of reinforced by the conditions that we presently have,” said the young man who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a multi-systemic connective tissue disorder that often affects his mobility.
