California to vote on adding abortion rights in state Constitution – Los Angeles Times
California voters will decide in November whether the state Constitution should explicitly protect a person’s right to an abortion and birth control.
On Monday, the Democratic-controlled Legislature gave final approval to a measure that would put the issue before the state’s voters, in the latest countermeasure aimed at the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.
Senate Constitutional Amendment 10 by Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) would, if approved by voters, further codify the state’s already progressive reproductive rights, which grant anyone of reproductive age “the fundamental right to choose to bear a child or to choose and to obtain an abortion.” Currently, those rights in California are held up by case law and statutory laws, but Atkins said hostile attacks on abortion access convinced her those aren’t enough.
“We know from history that abortion bans don’t end abortion,” said Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood), a co-author of SCA 10. “They only outlaw safe abortions. We must preserve the fundamental reproductive rights of women here in California, because they are under attack elsewhere.”

Swiss pledge to stop illegal gold imports from Brazil Indigenous reserves
- Switzerland imported 24.5 tonnes of gold in 2021, at least a fifth of which came from Brazilian Amazon states. Evidence indicates most of it is mined illegally on Indigenous lands. Illicit mining operations have resulted in major Amazon deforestation, widespread mercury poisoning and soaring violence.
- With the Brazilian government of Jair Bolsonaro unresponsive to the escalating crisis, an independent delegation of Indigenous people along with others travelled to Switzerland in May to plead with major gold refiners to end the importation of illicit Brazilian gold.
- This week, the refiners published a statement pledging to remove illegal gold mined within Brazilian Indigenous reserves from their supply chains. If the initiative is fully followed, experts say it could be a game changer that could undermine the, until now, lucrative illegal gold trade.
- Canada, the world’s biggest importer of gold, has made no such agreement.

Mount Macolod part 2
The reduction of Mount Macolod
2 April, the 187th attacked and cleared the area to the base of the mountain, but were unable to hold the ridges. One pocket of the enemy were dug in between the two southern ridges and small Japanese patrols were strewn along the highway near Talisay, indicating to Colonel Pearson that the enemy held that sector. His feelings were confirmed when his command post was hit with Japanese 155mm artillery shells. The quick reactions of the 674th Glider Field Artillery Battalion to counterattack saved the 2d 187th.
Captured Japanese artillery, Mt. Macolod
8 April, General MacArthur released a communiqué to state that because of the 11th Airborne’s actions, “…all organized enemy resistance in the southern part of the island was destroyed and liberation was at hand.” As usual, his assessment of the situation was premature, but it was just the type of…

THE HUMAN SIDE
It’s easy to distance oneself from our elected officials, even those who share our interests. There’s such a great distance between us, and at least I am usually in my cold political brain when I think about them. In fact, I’ve become so used to being lied to that I have become somewhat jaundiced about everyone and everything.
So an article in the Morning New York Times on Sunday belatedly touched an empathic part of me when I read Ian Prasad Philbrick’s story “In the Room.” He interviewed Times colleague and reporter Emily Cochrane who was trapped in the upper gallery of the House chamber during the January 6 attack. She recalled the period when “all of a sudden the people in front of me started moving again, climbing over chairs and bannisters so I did the same.”
The article describes those who sit in the back of the chamber…

Sanaa, Yemen – Sana, Jemen

A primeira vez
Que meus olhos
Se viram no seu olhar
Não tive a intenção
De me apaixonar
Mera distração e já era
Momento de se gostar
Quando dei por mim
Nem tentei fugir
Do visgo que me prendeu
Dentro do seu olhar…”
