USDA Allocates Nearly $1B for Schools to Purchase U.S.-Grown Foods | Food Manufacturing

The Biden Administration announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide nearly $1 billion in additional funding to schools to support the purchase of American-grown foods for their meal programs.

The department also applauds the President’s recent signing of the Keep Kids Fed Act, which equips schools, summer meal sites, and child care food programs with extra resources so they can continue serving children through school year 2022-2023. Both actions are a response to the significant challenges child nutrition program operators continue to face, such as high food costs and supply chain disruptions.

The right to safe legal abortions and to wield guns — given how the first is crumbling and the second is more out of control than ever — a fellow Meetup writer mused, “Guns will be used freely to hunt down anyone remotely associated with abortion. Just like in The Handmaid’s Tale (Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel and TV series).”

Myanmar People Fear for Suu Kyi’s Life After Move to Prison; World Largely Silent

Since the regime’s transfer of Myanmar’s elected leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to solitary confinement in a prison, most people in the country can’t help worrying that her life will be in danger, especially given her old age.

They know that their leader will remain calm and strong in spirit, even though she is alone. However, as she is a prisoner of the brutal and wicked regime at the age of 77, they are concerned over her fragile state and her wellbeing.

With restrictions lifted, Sheriff Villanueva says gun permits will rise in L.A. County – Los Angeles Times (Me: Don’t vote to re-elect him in LA County this fall.)

Villanueva said the Sheriff’s Department is seeing an increase in so-called concealed carry permit applications. He speculated that eventually 50,000 people in L.A. County could receive permission to arm themselves in public.

“We are retooling our operation to a shall-issue standard,” Villanueva said during a live social media broadcast on Wednesday, referring to a lenient standard under which law enforcement agencies must issue a weapon permit if the applicant has satisfied some minimal requirements.

I have voted in every election since I turned 18.
Very few candidates “inspired ” me. But, I wasn’t looking to date them. I was looking for at most, policies to improve my life. At least, folks that would not harm me or people like me. Every inch of progress in this country has come from DEMOCRATS.

Monkeypox soars in Europe, with more than 4,000 cases | CIDRAP

New data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization European regional office shows the monkeypox outbreak in Europe has grown to 4,177 cases in less than 2 months, with the United Kingdom producing 25% of those cases.

Germany has surpassed Spain and Portugal with a national total reaching 838 cases, compared to 736 cases in Spain and 365 in Portugal. France has 350 cases.

One day after the White House pledged more monkeypox vaccines would be deployed to states seeing outbreaks, the United States is also reporting a significant uptick in cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US total now stands at 351 cases from 28 states and Washington, D.C. after 45 more monkeypox cases were confirmed yesterday.

Remembering the World War II Frogmen Who Trained in Secret off the California Coast – Atlas Obscura

The commandos who trained on Catalina Island were primarily attached to the OSS’s Maritime Unit, assigned to insert into enemy territory by sea for reconnaissance and sabotage. To fill its ranks, the agency recruited top swimmers from throughout the armed forces. Korean prisoners of war, released after showing a commitment to fighting the Japanese, also participated in OSS training on Catalina.

Recruits with Japanese ancestry, such as Hamada and Yempuku, were invaluable as linguists and translators, and for their ability to infiltrate Japanese-controlled territory. Hamada grew up in Hawaii where, on December 7, 1941, he’d aimed a telescope at the sky and witnessed swarms of Japanese aircraft attacking Pearl Harbor. Even as Japanese Americans like him were being locked in internment camps by the U.S. government, he’d volunteered to serve his country as a member of the OSS—despite rumors that commandos had a 10 percent chance of survival.

To improve those odds, the recruits drilled in hand-to-hand combat, cryptography, map reading, and radio operations. For conditioning, they did calisthenics on the beach and took long runs up Catalina’s peaks and along its ridges. They also participated in multi-day survival exercises. Equipped with just a knife and a length of fishing line, the men built primitive shelters in the mountainous interior and hunted the island’s wild boar and feral goats. (Catalina also had a large bison herd, which had been brought to the island for a Hollywood film shoot in 1924. There is, however, no record of an OSS man ever bagging a bison.) Yempuku, another native of Hawaii, had trapped animals as a boy and proved adept as a survivalist, even catching the fast-moving quail that skitter through Catalina’s chaparral. Hamada was less enthusiastic, particularly when his team had to skin and gut a goat. “That was kind of nauseating,” he said. He preferred using a grenade to detonate his dinner, recalling: “You drop a hand grenade in the ocean and you’d see all kinds of fish…crab, abalone.”

California’s Change To Concealed Carry Permits Would Reduce Wide Variations Among Counties | LAist

Sen. Anthony Portantino, a Democrat from Glendale, introduced legislation that he said would “update” the state’s concealed carry law to make it more restrictive, while also complying with the highest court’s latest dictate.

The bill, which was authored by Bonta’s office, would create a new statewide application process that explicitly disqualifies applicants who have committed certain felonies or are the subject of restraining orders. Applicants would also need to be at least 21, provide three character witnesses and take an additional firearm storage and safety course.

Beyond the additional hurdles required of applicants, the bill would expand the number of designated “sensitive places” where even a concealed carry license holder would not be allowed to take their firearms. That exception is taken directly from the Supreme Court ruling, which held that the government is allowed to prohibit guns in certain areas, namely schools and government buildings.
