Vaccine remains in short supply as US monkeypox cases grow | CIDRAP

The monkeypox virus outbreak in the United States continues to grow, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists 767 US monkeypox cases, an increase of 67. New York has the most cases, with 153, followed by California with 136 and Illinois with 91.

As cases grow, monkeypox vaccine continues to be in short supply at the local level, including in Chicago and New York, which were the first cities to receive large shipments of doses from the US government.

1 in 8 U.S. deaths from 2020 to 2021 came from COVID-19 – leaving millions of relatives reeling from distinctly difficult grief

Our research shows that more than 9 million people have lost a close relative to COVID-19 in the U.S. This dramatic rise in bereavement is troubling because our research finds that COVID-19 bereavement not only increases people’s risk of depression, but can make them uniquely vulnerable to mental distress.

Filosofa's Word

A day or two ago, I played a song from 1972 … I had sort of played that game of “close your eyes, spin the wheel, and wherever your finger is pointing when the wheel stops …” and came up with First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack.  Most of you liked it just fine, but our friend Clive wasn’t all that thrilled with it.  So, I asked him what HE was listening to in 1972, and he mentioned the Eagles first album, so I took yet another stroll down memory lane and … oh yeah, there were some good ones on that album!  Tonight’s song is the first on the album and maybe the best, though I like several of the others as well.  Turns out, this is one of the few songs I don’t seem to have played on my music posts yet, so …

Stunning spread of BA.5 subvariant shows why this California COVID wave is different – Los Angeles Times

Coronavirus case rates have remained at persistently high levels statewide for months, infecting significant numbers of people and snarling business operations .Increasingly, more coronavirus-positive patients are being seen in the hospital.

Over the weeklong period ending Thursday, California reported an average of more than 15,500 new coronavirus cases per day. On a per capita basis, that’s about 278 cases a week for every 100,000 residents. That’s down about 12% compared with the previous week, but officials and experts say the apparent dip could partly be the result of data interruptions over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

When 0 (Zero) is Considered Inauspicious…

Kaushal Kishore

Zero is a unique number that makes zero, if it’s multiplied with any number. Zero by itself has no value, but it’s a very selfless digit. If kept along side another digit, it increases its value. As the money increases, the number of zeroes also increases-
10
100
1000
10000 and so on…

But in India, that invented zero, it’s preferable to add 1 instead of 0 at the end, when it comes to give or receive money, e.g.
11
51
101
1001
5001
10001 and so on…

Number 0 (Zero) is considered inauspicious. In Hindi, Zero is called Shunya that means a void, a state of nothingness, a state of Moksha (Salvation). Therefore, at the end of whatever is given or taken, there should be 1 (unity) and not 0 (emptiness) as per Indian culture and traditions.

Rounded numbers like 500, 1000, 2000 etc are considered stable numbers and…

Happiness (and laughter) at work

Raffaello Palandri's Blog

I’m a sustainer and a promoter of the idea of Happiness at Work (I am the proud coordinator of the Happiness Fest Events in Nuremberg every year), and happiness requires a bit of humor.

Humor is also a clear sign of intelligence, which is never a bad thing in a business environment.

Workplaces that are too serious and that are against a healthy dose of laughter, happiness, and humor, have a severe negative impact on their employees and managers.
So it’s a good idea to keep an open mind, laugh, be happy, and be able to use your wits.

Emotional intelligence is also involved here: laughing is an extremely effective system to create social bonds, decrease interpersonal and hierarchical distance, and promote communication and teamwork.
