Rio Grande Runs Dry, Then Wet

Rio Grande Runs Dry, Then Wet Boom and bust water cycles and ephemeral rivers are familiar features of the desert Southwest. But the last time the Albuquerque reach dried (1983), the reservoirs along its length stood much higher. Today, with drought, weak snowpack, a lack of rain, and continued high water demand, the river’s reservoirs are facing historic lows. At the end of July, New Mexico’s largest reservoir, Elephant Butte, stood at 4 percent of capacity, its lowest level since the 1970s.

In the third week of August, a sub-tropical low from the Gulf of Mexico brought intense storms, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding to the region. But the rains cannot fully alleviate the continuing drought conditions across the Southwest, which are due to long-term accumulated precipitation deficits, according to the University of Arizona’s Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS). “Sustained monsoon activity helped reduce the most extreme drought characterizations, but is not enough to reverse long-term drought conditions,” CLIMAS reported in August.

“The Rio Grande through New Mexico is a snow-melt driven system,” Ball said. “As temperatures increase and winter precipitation becomes less reliable, drought is likely to become an endemic state in the Rio Grande Basin. As in much of the Western U.S., water resources will have to be reexamined as water supply struggles to match demand.”

Today’s snarky snippets are a bit different than usual, focusing on some who have earned kudos or a thumb-up for their actions, for their courage and integrity.

A man with integrity in Colorado

The Republican Party of today is not known for its truth-telling, not known for its integrity, and not known for its democratic principles.  It is, rather, known for its bigotry, its devotion to wealth and the wealthy, and its obstruction of anything that would benefit the people of this nation.  There are, however, a few exceptions.  Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are two of those notable exceptions, however both have paid a high price for ‘doing the right thing’.  Out in Colorado, though, there is another:  State Senator Kevin Priola.

Priola is resigning from the Republican Party and becoming a Democrat, citing the party’s complicity in the Jan. 6 insurrection and 2020 election denial as the reason…

Newsom vetoes bill proposing California overdose prevention sites – Los Angeles Times

Newsom reiterated that he was committed to harm reduction strategies, but said pilot programs need to be well planned and include strong local leadership. He said he would instruct California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly to convene city and county officials to “discuss minimum standards and best practices” that could then be recommended to the Legislature.

“I remain open to this discussion when those local officials come back to the Legislature with recommendations for a truly limited pilot program – with comprehensive plans for siting, operations, community partnerships, and fiscal sustainability that demonstrate how these programs will be run safely and effectively,” he wrote.

Regenerative agriculture in Mexico boosts yields while restoring nature

Based on research in Guatemala and Honduras, the team began to experiment with intercropping the corn with species that can help the soils recover, focusing on two key species: the trailing legume Canavalia and the ice cream-bean, Inga edulis, locally known as guama. This practice is part of agroforestry, an agricultural system combining trees with growing crops and raising livestock which not only produces food, but supports biodiversity, builds organic content in soils, boosts water table levels and sequesters carbon from the atmosphere. Both the guama and the Canavalia are part of the Fabaceae or bean family, and as such have roots that fix nitrogen in the soil. They also grow quickly, making them a “permanent biomass factory,” providing a cover of organic matter on the ground surface that maintains soil moisture, breaks down nutrients for other plants, and prevents the growth of weeds, thereby reducing the need for herbicides.

The research showed using traditional methods resulted in an average yield of 3.5 metric tons per hectare (1.6 short tons per acre) with an investment of roughly $865 per hectare ($350 per acre), Baez tells Mongabay. Yet an additional investment of between $312 and $480 per hectare ($126-$194 per acre), could bring yields up to 7 metric tons per hectare (3.1 short tons per acre) in the first year and maintain that level going forward.

While this increase in revenue is important for farmers, Baez says it also has wider community benefits: boosting water availability, reducing particulate matter in the air from fires, and capturing more carbon from the atmosphere. Additionally, INIFAP found that regenerative methods alleviate compacted soils, allowing moisture to penetrate deeper into the ground even during droughts.
