Tales of Writing + Books + Compassion + Culture + Wagging Tails

Searching for intelligent heartfelt posts about writing, arts, and love by a novelist (tales) that’s fun (happiness) and animal-loving (tails)?

If you enjoy the ideas and sensibility here and on the audio version of this blog, Happiness Between Tails Podcast, you’ll love my novels once they’re published — “Flamenco & the Sitting Cat” and its sequel, “Tango & the Sitting Cat.” They’re my love letters to all who worry that they’re too odd or old, too damaged or whatever, to find happiness with or without a partner.

Republicans Love Handouts Until Black People Benefit From Them

Like many of Black Americans, I had to take out loans to pay for college. More than 57% of Black people have received a pell grant (and more than 75% of students attending HBCUs). It’s America’s catch-22, where you need education to find employment to live comfortably. However, if you don’t have the wealth to pay for it, you’ll end up working to pay that off for the rest of your working career. For Black people, that means paying off a mortgage worth of debt while not even having a house.

This is why the Biden administration’s move to forgive up to $20,000 in Pell Grant debt and cap payments at 5% of a person’s income will help Black Americans across the country who have been bogged down financially. Now, families might be able to put more towards savings, buy a house or a car, and pay down other debts. But of course, Republican lawmakers couldn’t wait to demonize this move.

We were fortunate that Omicron turned out to be as mild as it has been, says BioNTech co-founder Uğur Şahin. In an interview, he says he expects that his company’s adapted vaccine will be available in September, just in time for the first Oktoberfest to take place in Germany since the pandemic. ♫ Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind ♫

Filosofa's Word

I used to be a very organized person.  No honest … I did!  Not so today, though.  I find that at this stage in my life, my mind has become somewhat cluttered and, while I may not like it, I cannot seem to get things put back where they belong.  For example, every time one of you suggests a song you’d like to hear, I make note of it in a file of “To Be Played” songs, and usually … sometimes … I put the name of the person who requested it next to the song.  Then again, more often than not I think, “Oh, no need to note that … I’ll remember!”  🤣🤣  Anyway, I was at somewhat of a loss for a song to play tonight, so I drug out the ol’ list … for the first time in probably six months or more!  Makes me wonder…

Arizona: Senate Candidate Blake Masters Covers Up His 100% Opposition to Abortion

Diane Ravitch's blog

Blake Masters is the Republican candidate opposing incumbent Democratic Senator Mark Kelly in Arizona. Masters is closely allied with misogynistic billionaire Peter Thiel.

On his campaign website, he declared that was completely opposed to abortion at any stage of pregnancy, with no exceptions. He said he was “100% pro-life.” He called Roe v. Wade a “horrible” decision.

He called for “a federal personhood law (ideally a Constitutional amendment) that recognizes that unborn babies are human beings that may not be killed.”

But then came the election in Kansas, where Republican women joined with Democrats to block an effort to remove the right to an abortion from the state constitution.

Now, reports the Arizona Republic, Masters has softened the language on his website to pretend to be a moderate on abortion. In other words, he is trying to pull a Kavanaugh, pretending that he is not what he is.

He removed…

Paxlovid reduces risk of COVID-19 death by 81%, Clalit study shows – The Jerusalem Post

Among patients 65 years of age or older, the rate of hospitalization due to COVID-19 was 14.7 cases per 100,000 person-days among treated patients, compared with 58.9 cases per 100,000 person-days among untreated ones.

DNR Issues Guidelines in Anticipation of Fall Surge of Avian Influenza – 9 & 10 News

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is asking all hunters to be observant and careful when harvesting and handling wild birds because of the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.

“As Michigan waterfowl hunters get out in the fields and marshes this season, we want them to know there is a lot they can do both to help prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza and to keep themselves, others and our bird and wildlife populations safe,” Megan Moriarty, the state wildlife veterinarian with the DNR, said.

The DNR released guidelines for waterfowl hunters that include the following:

  • Harvest only waterfowl that act and look healthy, make sure you are not handling or eating sick game
  • Field dress and prepare game outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
  • Wear rubber or disposable latex gloves while handling and cleaning game
  • Remove and discard intestines soon after harvesting and avoid direct contact with the intestinal contents
  • Do not eat, drink, smoke or vape while handling carcasses
  • When done handling game, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, clean knives, equipment and surfaces that came in contact with the game, and wash hands before and after handling any meat
  • Keep waterfowl cool, below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, until processed and then refrigerate or freeze
  • Thoroughly cook all game to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit before eating it

Although the rate of positive cases has slowed over the summer, a recent uptick in cases of wild bird die-offs, neurologically abnormal wild birds and HPAI detections has caused the DNR to issue additional guidance. According to the DNR, influenza experts are expecting a resurgence of avian influenza as waterfowl starts to migrate and the fall hunting season begins.

Universal flu vaccine protects against variants of both influenza A and B viruses, researchers find — ScienceDaily

Vaccinating mice with this universal vaccine candidate induced broad neuraminidase inhibition, M2 ectodomain specific antibodies and T cell immune responses. Comparable cross protection was induced in aged mice.

The study warrants further testing of this unique, universal vaccine candidate in ferrets, which have similar respiratory tracts to humans.

Co-authors of the study include Ki-Hye Kim (co-first author), Zhuo Li (co-first author), Noopur Bhatnagar, Jeeva Subbiah, Bo Ryoung Park, Chong Hyun Shin, Bao-Zhong Wang and Sang-Moo Kang of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State; and Peter Pushko of Medigen Inc.

The study is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
