The Week’s Best Cartoons 9/3

The biggest topic for the political cartoonists this past week has once again been … the former guy.  I don’t know about you all, but I’m pretty sick…

Crimes against the Amazon reverberate across Brazil, analysis shows

  • Crimes associated with illegal logging, mining and other illicit activities in the Brazilian Amazon are being felt in 24 of Brazil’s 27 states, a new report shows.
  • Records of more than 300 Federal Police operations between 2016 and 2021 show that crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, corruption and wildlife trafficking are reverberating far beyond the rainforest.
  • Deforestation is at the center of the criminal economy in the Amazon, driving four main illegal activities: logging, mining, occupation of public lands, and environmental violations associated with agriculture.
  • Nearly half of the police operations investigated crimes that occurred in protected areas in the Amazon, including 37 Indigenous territories.

The Brazilian Amazon covers nine of the country’s 27 states, but environmental crimes committed in the rainforest have rippled out to nearly every single state, a new analysis shows.

India develops its first cervical cancer vaccine | Reuters

Two human papillomavirus (HPV) types, 16 and 18, are responsible for at least 70% of cervical cancers, and India’s Department of Biotechnology said the Indian vaccine would work on HPV types 16 and 18, as well as 6 and 11.

Merck & Co (MRK.N) and GSK Plc (GSK.L) are the main makers of HPV vaccines.

“The indigenously developed vaccine will make our country self-sufficient in curbing female mortality caused by cervical cancer,” SII Chief Executive Adar Poonawalla said in a statement.

In today’s time, should poetry be “hard” to read or hard to post?

A poem in Vietnamese by Lê Vĩnh Tài

IN TODAY’S TIME, SHOULD POETRY BE “HARD” TO READ OR “HARD” TO POST?

1. I have never made a conscious decision to write a poem.

The random story or dream grabs a hold of me and “makes” me write them down. Perhaps this is why I usually jot everything down at such a rapid rate. I always feel rather wishy-washy when I’m confined to “structure” in a poem. The idea of how to write a poem is rather an odd concept to me, not any kind of meaningful experience. It is nothing but a reaction to a current event, with what has just happened, to thereafter no longer be affected by it, and that is all. This is the reason why I thoroughly enjoy the absurdity of the creative process…

Russian Anarchists Are Sabotaging Railways to Stop Putin’s War on Ukraine

Russian railways had reportedly been sabotaged by various dissidents on as many as sixty-three occasions during the first three months of Putin’s invasion, according to a Russia-focused independent media outlet The Insider, although the publication noted some instances of malfunction may be attributable to routine mechanical failures. Some of the attacks were done in collaboration with a clandestine network of railway workers, hackers, and other dissidents located in Belarus, Russia, and elsewhere throughout the region. Human rights groups reported that in the early months of the invasion, at least 11 dissidents in Belarus were arrested after being linked to the sabotage by authorities.
