So, you won’t be home for the new year

NYE 2016, Sydney Harbour, Australia

SO YOU WON’T BE HOME FOR THE NEW YEAR Sending you from home a wisp of the wind The twenty ninth is short of a day hence we're celebrating early on the thirtieth Actually you're supposed to repaint the fading gate of time Change your mother’s flickering lights for a year now, waits Doesn’t happen where you live but the dust continues to burn our eyes The sound of sighing drowning in a sea of absence. Send you the breeze from the delta The towering shadow of the water in Phan falls endlessly in longing In blooms of hope dotted with wild blossoms The astonishing crowd at the market at the end of the year. I want to end you the moments in your twenties As an expatriate you became Suddenly self-reliance…

Growing local farming in US and Canada or growing more single-family homes – which might better for society now?

In southwest Ohio, thousands of acres of former farmland have been plowed under to “plant” new communities of single family housing, as well as mini-malls, now emptying mega-malls and the paving over what used to be dirt or gravel roads over the past 50 years. The result: we have many thousands of cars being driven 30-75 miles by one person driving to and from work everyday and more and more food has to be shipped in from hundreds and thousands of miles rather than a dozen or so miles daily to local markets.

Is it time now to think about how we might encourage new farms in older suburbs and the construction of good multi-family neighborhoods to improve local nutrition, environment, society? Rethinking metropolitan areas makes more sense to me than to export farming to low income nations that also results in the destruction of old forest ecologies, so we can then import food by ship and planes…

The Mennonites being accused of deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon | Peru | The Guardian (Me: They are – despite good self-intentions – deforesting the land because it is cheaper land than in Canada or US…)

Environmentalists worry this could just be the beginning of the Mennonite invasion in Peru. Satellite images show land clearing for another settlement, also in Loreto, a vast Amazon region the size of Germany. A 2021 study in the Journal of Land Use Science says Mennonites have 200 settlements across seven countries in Latin America and collectively occupy more land than the Netherlands.

Peru lost a record 2,032 sq km of Amazon to deforestation in 2020, a figure almost four times the 548 sq km it lost in 2019, according to its environment ministry.

Dutch city to ban meat ads in world first claim

The Dutch city of Haarlem is set to become the first in the world to ban advertisements for most meat because of its impact on climate change, officials have said.

The city of 160,000 people near Amsterdam has agreed to outlaw ads for intensively farmed meat on public places like buses, shelters and screens from 2024.

The move was approved by the city council in November, but went unnoticed until last week when a councillor announced he had officially notified advertising agencies.

“It will be the first city in the Netherlands – and in fact Europe and indeed the world – to ban ‘bad’ meat ads in public places,” Ziggy Klazes, councillor for the GroenLinks (Green-Left) party who drafted the motion, told AFP.
