Is UNESCO Greenwashing the luxury brand LVMH? – “Biosphere reserves: Mobilizing against deforestation in the Amazon. UNESCO has partnered with LVMH, the luxury goods group, to fight against the direct and indirect drivers of deforestation in the Amazonian region.” ???

According to UNESCO: “UNESCO has partnered with LVMH, the luxury goods group, to fight against the direct and indirect drivers of deforestation in the Amazonian region.

Based on participatory approaches that combine scientific, local and indigenous knowledge, the programme will be monitored by teams in eight biosphere reserves – in Bolivia (Pilón-Lajas, and Beni); Brazil (Central Amazon); Ecuador (Yasuní, Sumaco, and Podocarpus-El Condor); and Peru (Manu, and Oxapampa-Ashaninka-Yanesha).

The aim of the initiative is to promote the rehabilitation of degraded lands, while ensuring sustainable employment for local populations. In the Beni biosphere reserve, for example, the programme plans to build a greenhouse, and provide families in four communities with high-quality seeds of native timber species (mahogany) and local forest species (banana, coffee, cocoa, and citrus). These will be used to create plots under agroforestry systems, in fallow land traditionally used for agriculture.”

Comforting Thought: The mind is a mosaic

Content Catnip

Modern neuroscience has confirmed this notion of the mind as a kind of society.

We all have parts. Right now a part of me feels like taking a nap. Another part wants to keep writing.

How well we get along with ourselves depends largely upon our internal leadership skills. How well we listen to our different parts, make sure they feel taken care of, and keep them from sabotaging one another. Parts often come across as absolutes. When in fact they represent only one element in a complex constellation of thoughts, emotions and sensations.

Do the Right Thing Anyway

From Behind the Pen

Sometimes it is better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thing. -Tony Blair

It seems like there should be no room for discussion on whether or not you should choose to do the right thing. I’ve heard the following questions asked more often than not, and it pains me that these messages resonate with more callousness than I care to hear.

  • Why bother helping THOSE people?

First of all, THOSE people are us. It seems like we have become so alienated from each other simply because of our biases. If you think it is not your problem today, it may be tomorrow. Help anyway.

  • Why should I try to be honest and do the right thing when clearly doing the wrong thing seems to be winning?

Doing the right thing may not be popular in your circles or winning…

Japanese city uses snow to cool data center

Darcy Hitchcock

Data centers generate a lot of heat. In northern Japan, a server farm is collecting and storing snow to keep their electronics cool. They’re also putting their waste heat to good use growing food.

https://www.gov-online.go.jp/eng/publicity/book/hlj/html/202201/202201_07_en.html

Roughly 200,000 tons of snow are plowed from the streets of Bibai each year, and city authorities are partnering with WDC to deliver some of that snow to its data center. With the extra cooling capacity, the goal is to scale up the center from 20 server racks to 200.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/06/tech/japan-white-data-center-snow-cooled-servers-climate-scn-spc-intl/index.html

Surprisingly, the White Data Center is able to store and use the snow in summer by insulating it with wood chips.

During the summer months, the snow mound is insulated with a covering of wood chips and dirt. Storing “free” cold energy falling from the sky is a no-brainer as a business opportunity, says Takahisa Tsuchiya, executive director of Bibai City’s economic department. “We…

X-Treme Everything Deviled Eggs

snapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Waste Not, Want Not: X-treme Everything Deviled Eggs! When it comes to deviled eggs, you hear a plethora of descriptions ranging from “world’s best” to “million dollar” to “dangerously good” deviled eggs. But here’s the catch: Everyone has a different number of taste buds. They extend beyond your tongue to include the roof of your mouth as well as the inner cheeks and throat. What you find appealing may not interest me in the least. Here’s a good example. Everything But Bagel Seasoning contains garlic, onion, poppy seeds, and sesame seeds. While it may make your heart flutter sprinkled all over a freshly baked bagel, it may sound completely gross mixed in a deviled egg. On the other hand, when I topped the deviled egg with a clump of newly grown alfalfa sprouts, my taste buds did something similar to a TikTok dance. Just saying.
