A lawmaker from Vladivostok who fled Russia after it invaded Ukraine has received asylum in the United States.

Viktor Kamenshchikov, who represented the Communist Party in the city’s legislature, said in a social media post on October 22 that his request for political asylum has been approved and he has been released from detention.

“I am free, I have received asylum, and now I can be a full member of American society. Was it a long process? Yes, but I don’t regret it at all,” he said in a Telegram post.

Jamaicans for Justice condemns murder of two policemen

Petchary's Blog

Human rights groups are not popular in Jamaica. Many Jamaicans do not seem to understand what the philosophy behind their work is, and wrongly ascribe motives to them that are very far from the truth. Our leaders frequently make snide remarks about them, especially when they are talking to a supportive audience, perhaps the party faithful – because they know that it is a popular thing to say.

The philosophy of human rights, in Jamaica and everywhere else, is extremely simple: Human rights are for all. Full stop. That means everyone: women, children, police officers, LGBTQI+ individuals, the rich, the poor, the elderly, the disabled, rural dwellers, young men and women, city dwellers, squatters, homeless people, the mentally ill, churchgoers, “law-abiding citizens” of every stripe – and oh yes, even “criminals” (as they are usually so labeled before they are actually convicted) – who do in fact still have a…

Gender-based violence and the young Jamaican woman

Petchary's Blog

I wrote recently about the Caribbean Observatory on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, based in Antigua. According to their CEO, the group “continues to work with partners, CSOs, state entities to critically address the linkages between gender-based violence (GBV) and SRHR with the aim of transforming the environment, including the engagement of men and boys as change agents.” If you are interested in contacting the Caribbean Observatory, their email is: advocomms.cfpa@gmail.com or Whatsapp (868) 294-8470, and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

On Tuesday, October 25 at 4:30 p.m. (Jamaican time, 5:30 p.m. EST) the organisation will launch its Virtual Knowledge Platform on Zoom. This comprises an interactive website that uses a database, country profiles, dashboards, blogs, multimedia and factsheets that will serve as avenues to convey information on human rights agreements, policies related to SRHR/Gender based violence issues, advocacy and tracking progress in the region. The website…

October 25, 2022: partial eclipse of the Sun in Italy |

Tuesday 25 October 2022 in Italy it will be possible to admire a ’partial eclipse of the Sun that will take place in the late morning, with the peak expected around 12.20, when the Moon will cover the solar disk for about 20%. There will therefore be no total obscuration, as the center of our star is not perfectly aligned with that of our satellite, as happens in the case of a total and annular eclipse.
