Use It or Lose It: the Brain and Dementia

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

Medical News Today (MNT) reports on a new study relating Internet use to resistance to dementia.(1) The report finds that from a study of more than 18,000 US adults age 50 and over, use of the internet for at least 30 minutes per day is associated with a 43% reduction in the risk of developing dementia.

The big caveat on this remarkable finding is that this is a statistical analysis, not a causal model. We don’t know how usage of the brain impedes the development of dementia, just that it seems to do it.

A second caveat is that perhaps half of dementia patients are never formally diagnosed with the disease.(2) Dementia can of course take a range of forms from very mild to severe, and a doctor may not even notice that a patient has a milder form.

On the other hand, the research is consistent with other findings…

“Dear Future Earth…” Jamaican students reflect at the Institute of Jamaica

Petchary's Blog

Just over a week ago – and the day before Earth Day 2023 – I had the great pleasure of attending the awards ceremony for this year’s competition, organised annually by the Natural History Museum of Jamaica’s (NHMJ) Education Department for students aged 12 to 19 years. It’s an arts competition, including poetry, poster art, video, and photography – now in its 23rd illustrious year! The NHMJ is a division of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ).

There were two contrasting moods at the event, which took place in the lovely old-fashioned IOJ Lecture Hall. There was a great deal of joy: smiles on all the faces, laughter, and a complete absence of bitter competition and sour grapes. Everyone – students, teachers, IOJ officials, and a few parents – was happy to be there. On the other hand, there was an underlying seriousness, as the high school students reflected on the…

Is Covid really over? WHO’s announcement sounds more like surrender than victory | Coronavirus | The Guardian

Professor Susan Michie, director of the Centre for Behaviour Change at University College London. “Whether Covid-19 is labelled a global pandemic or not, many countries around the world are experiencing significant waves of infection, with thousands dying every week,” she said. “This will continue for the foreseeable future while there is no global effort to reduce Covid-19, and hence no global effort to reduce the likelihood of damaging new variants.”

Professor Benjamin Neuman of Texas A&M University was even more critical. “This bittersweet announcement seems more a white flag than a cause for celebration,” he said. “While there has been profound progress, this decision reflects the political reality of Covid more clearly than the medical situation.”

Avian Flu Diary: The Pandemic Is Ended, But The Malady Lingers On

With a `don’t test, don’t tell’ policy now in effect around the globe, we can now pretend the threat is gone.  But millions of people continue to be infected every week, with thousands of those dying.  And while 99%+ will likely survive their acute illness, we have pretty compelling evidence that every re-infection increases the chances of developing serious cardiovascular, renal, pulmonary, neurological, and endocrine disorders.
